WAR PLEDGE A SURPRISE Unexpectedly Carries Off Frankfort Purse Main Race at Latonia Pays 3820 for 2 in Defeating Red Basil Amazing and Two Others Only Fair Sized Crowd Out LATONIA Ky June 21 The Frankfort Purse at a mile and seventy yards was the feature of Thursdays card at Latonia and it was won by War Pledge a threeyearold gelding owned by the racing firm of Bianchi and Scott Finishing in the wake of the son of Crusader and Polly Pledge and in the order as they passed the judges stand were Red TBasil Amazing Southland Duke and My Gentleman GentlemanWar War Pledge which had a hard time grad ¬ uating from the maiden ranks here several days ago came from last place at the head of the stretch to win the race all by himself His margin over Red Basil at the finish was two and a half lengths while two lengths farther back came Amazing AmazingThe The winner was virtually overlooked in the betting for he paid 3820 for 2 in the mutuels Amazing a strong favorite essayed to cut out the pace and for about three quarters maintained a short lead over South ¬ land Duke This early effort weakened both of them for they tired badly after reaching the stretch stretchWar War Pledge which had been rated along nicely during this time had no difficulty taking command when his rider H Louman was ready readyRed Red Basil also raced the early part of it under restraint and though he was easily best of the others he had no chance against the winner winnerA A fair sized crowd turned out for the sport which was presented under a cloudy sky Fields for the most part were small and a majority of the winners scored off by themselves themselvesThe The secondary attraction on the card was the fifth race a sprint of six furlongs and it was won by Lady Pal from the stable of Darnaby Thompson This threeyearold filly was hustled into an early lead and held her opponents safe throughout win ¬ ning by two lengths Second to complete the journey was Broadcaster while third money fell to Caw Caw Marie Jean and Julia Irene were the only other starters startersBroadcaster Broadcaster almost an equal choice in the betting with the winner clung to second position all the way around and though G Elston had him under a drive from the head of the stretch he could not gain on the pacemaker As a matter of fact after the first quarter the horses never changed their positions positionsThe The opening race saw J W Parrishs Newell make a show of a band of maiden twoyearolds winning the five and a half furlongs dash by four lengths D Taylor had the Craigangower gelding off in a hurry and he remained in the lead throughout never being threatened at any stage stageEdith Edith W which was slow leaving the starting gate closed an immense gap to be second while Amazement well up all the way was third Had she gotten away better Edith W might have offered the winner stronger contention Mint Baby raced promi ¬ nently to the stretch where she gave way suddenly and finished far back backThe The start was delayed considerably due to the misbehavior of several contestants the principal offenders being Amazement Mint Baby and Blanche C CThe The third race another maiden affair for twoyearolds saw R L Stivers Tripp Up score a onesided victory After racing head and head with Butterfly for nearly a half mile the two parted company with Tripp Up drawing away to win as his rider G South pleased The winners margin at the finish was four lengths After weakening Butterfly hung on to save second money while Squire Bob was an easy third thirdThe The first three horses had the race to themselves after the first half though be ¬ fore that Grand Poise racing in third place seemed to have a chance chanceSilver Silver Blue from which more contention was expected was slow to begin and did not start running until it was too late lateThe The fourth race over six furlongs re ¬ sulted in an upset when Scotland Beauty owned by Mrs A Van Den Ende drove down a length in front of Earl Baker The latter had been backed confidently and started off as if he might have the race all to himself but Scotland Beauty which had been racing far off the pace for the first half mile came with a burst of speed in the stretch and won going away Third money FlagScotland went to Polas Flag Scotland Beauty ridden by A Craig was a 10 to 1 shot The only other horse in the field of six which figured in the run ¬ ning of the race was Our Gale which was third during the early part of it
