HOMEWOOD 111 June 21 Improving on his recent victorious effort Gold Signet equalled the Washington Park record for seven furlongs in carrying the silks of Chas B Shaffers Coldstream vStud to an easy triumph in the Beecher Purse feature event of an ordinary program today The Pot au Feu gelding raced the distance in 123 to defeat P Kelleys Chartres by three lengths while Mrs R Pollards Reservist was third four lengths farther away and a head in advance of Glynson GlynsonIdeal Ideal racing conditions brought out a good sized week day crowd and repeated suc ¬ cesses of the well backed horses kept the spectators in a happy mood moodJackie Jackie Westrojje had the mount on Gold Signet and he had him away with such speed that the Coldstream representative soon took a clear lead Taken under steady restraint Gold Signet nevertheless displayed good speed as he ran the first quarter in 23 seconds and the half mile in 47 seconds Chartres attempted to overhaul him in the stretch after the Pot au Feu gelding had reached the threequarters in 111 but Westrope only had to shake up his mount to have him past the judges with three lengths to spare over the Kelley colt with much in reserve Reservist came from well back to take third from the tiring Glynson Blue Day was well backed but after being restrained to the stretch tired when called upon uponA A strong finish by Eddie Arcaro brought victory to the Blue Ridge Farms Dusky Devil in the seventh race and permitted that lad to score his third victory of the day The Bright Knot fouryearold was com ¬ pelled to lose considerable ground during the running of the mile race as he held a con ¬ tending position with Jens Son making the pace and Indian Salute close by byArcaro Arcaro rated his mount well and when called upon in the final straightaway Dusky Devil wore down Jens Son and held the stoutclosing General Parth at his throat latch The early leader was third a length and a half farther away with Indian Salute fourth Glastonbury and Aladdins Dream completed the field and the time of 137 was among the fastest of the meeting meetingOther Other winners ridden by Arcaro were Pomparagon and Fire Star StarCONSISTENT CONSISTENT JUVENILE FILLY FILLYCountess Countess Bina Mrs N Forshas consist ¬ ent juvenile filly by Cherokee scored her fifth consecutive triumph of the meeting by easily racing home before four other young ¬ sters over the five and onehalf furlongs route in the fourth race She was entered to be claimed for 1800 and three bids were made for her the successful one being the Texasowned Running W Ranch rep ¬ resented by trainer J A Gormley The un ¬ successful bidders were J B Partridge and J Dine DineRidden Ridden by J King Countess Bina easily qutfooted the others and drawing away in the Kwamudi by seven lengths Well lapped on the latter were Napoleon W and Bossie Eye the three of them engaging in several bumping matches J Dines Broadstep strongly supported defeated six other threeyearold sprinters Of minor class jn the opening dash but only after he had been vigorously ridden by O Harbort in the late stages He finished a half length ahead of the fast closing Legal Gamble while Black Miss some distance away just nosed out Black Joe for third honors after having been in the lead for more than half of the journey Broadstep was cleverly handled by Harbort who rated the Broadway Jones gelding along when Black Miss wrested the lead from him himFAULTLESS FAULTLESS HANDLING HANDLINGEddie Eddie Arcaro gave C E Davisons Pomj paragon faultless handling to have him in front in the second race a seveneighths dash for lowly platers The threeyearold Pompey colt scored by a half length over Shasta Broom with Pollys Folly taking third three lengths further away and a head in advance of Anita Ormont Pom paragon was always in the thick of the ac ¬ tion saving ground in the early stages but Arcaro had to take him to the outside at the stretch turn to find room for his run Shasta Broom forced the pace throughout under hard riding while Anita Ormont tired in the stretch after having been hard used getting to the front frontB B M Rosenheim Chicago owner supplied his first winner of the meeting in the third race when Fire Star easily defeated seven other ordinary threeyearolds over the threequarters distance Ridden by Eddie Arcaro and his second straight winning mount Fire Star was well played and her victory was popularly received The start was straggling with the four inside horses having an edge over the four on the out ¬ side Fire Star stepped right to the front and had no difficulty holding her position to the end where she was three lengths clear of Lady La Marne Woodjander was third thirdJockey Jockey J King almost kept himself from scoring a double by a show of carelessness in the final yards of the sixth race in which his mount the Glen Errol Stables Morpheus nosed out Single Stripe with Temple Dancer third Morpheus slipped through along the rail at the head of the stretch to assume command when Single Stripe went wide and after taking a half length lead the Dozer gelding was permitted to loaf with the result that Single Stripe coming again under Balaskis hard urging all but overtook him Temple Dancer took third after losing considerable ground on the final turn
