exceedingly hot With the course slow when the four fillies met in the Oaks Mata Hari traversed the mile and a furlong dis ¬ tance in the good time of 155 155Supported Supported almost to the exclusion Mata Hari assumed a clear lead at the clubhouse turn where jockey Earl Steffen took her under restraint She galloped along easily down the back stretch with first three and then five lengths to spare Dust Girl had no difficulty holding second position with Long Bit at her heels and Marcella H much farther away awayOn On the second turn Mata Hari increased her lead to eight lengths so that at the top of the stretch Steffen gave her a breathing spell This was the signal for Dust Girl to move up on her Long Bit had attempted to pass the Shandon filly on the turn but was unable to do so and fell back As the field moved up on Mata Hari her sup ¬ porters had a sickening feeling but Dust Girl could get no closer than two lengths to the favorite Steffen sensed danger at the sixteenth post and hit his mount once with the whip She met the call by bounding away to a final margin of three lengths Long Bit was overhauling Dust Girl again in the late stages and was lapped on the latter at the end while Marcella H was still far back backThomas Thomas C Worden Chicago sportsman uncovered a likely juvenile in the opening dash of five and onehalf furlongs in which his Prince Splendor easily the best of the seven juveniles meeting at five and onehalf furlongs under claiming conditions in the fourth race Paul 1 Keester took no chances with the daughter f of Brown Bud and hustled her all the way She triumphed by seven lengths over Lady r Louella with Jewelry holding third honors The winner took command soon after the J start and the farther she went the greater r her lead leadCotton Cotton Club finding a track to his liking r and well ridden by Eddie Arcaro accounted 1 for the fifth race after a hard battle which i saw him finishing the mile and seventy yards 3 with a length margin over Unkie Tom with i Trevallion finishing third The Brown Bud 1 threeyearold was slow in reaching his 3 stride but when Arcaro got him going he i gained steadily and threading his way be ¬ tween horses reached a contending position i at the head of the stretch There he was 3 called upon for everything he had and slowly wearing down first Trevallion and 1 then Unkie Tom Cotton Club drew
