ROSE CROSS VICTORIOUS Scores First Important Victory in Famous Dwyer Stakes i Growler Second and Singing Wood Third in Mile and a Half Race at Aqueduct Course J NEW YORK N Y June 23 Rose Cross sori of St Germans and Red Red Rose carried the silks of the Manhasset Stable the nom de course of Mrs Charles S Payson and Mrs Charles V Laughlin to a galloping victory in the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct today Far back of the handsome black colt W Maxwells Growler easily took second place from Mrs John Hay Whitneys Sing ¬ ing Wood winner of the Withers and the Queens County Handicap and greatest money winning thoroughbred of last year yearUnfortunately Unfortunately this renewal of the Dwyer which had its first running as the Brooklyn Derby back in 1887 did not bring out the field desired Several of the outstanding eligibles Cavalcade the champion among them was absent but it proved an excellent week end feature and brought an immense crowd to the course of the Queens County Jockey Club ClubBy By his victory and incidentally the only important victory of his career Rose Cross added 4090 to his earnings and took a place among the truly good stayers of the season He has improved with each appear ¬ ance and may go higher before the end of the racing year yearCARRY CARRY OVER SETS PACE PACEFitzsimmons Fitzsimmons with three in the field elected to have Carry Over the Wheatley Stable colt cut the pace and he went along for a first quarter in 24 a bit fast for such a long gallop Singing Wood under restraint was following him and Jones had Rose Cross under steady restraint within striking distance of the son of Royal Min ¬ strel Growler was galloping strongly back of these and it was Cleves the other of the Fitzsimmons trio that was in the rear With rearWith this order maintained Carry Over reached the half in 49 and he was still well clear with Jones making no effort to catch him with Singing Wood while Coucci was content to restrain Mrs Whitneys colt Growler was gradually making up ground The six furlongs was reached in 115 and the mile in 141 but by that time Singing Wood was moving up on Carry Over and Coucci was matching the move with Rose Cross while Growler was also gaining Carry gainingCarry Over tired before the stretch was reached and Singing Wood took command As he moved Coucci also moved with Rose Cross and the latter raced past with little effort though Coucci had not asked the son of St Germans to fully extend himself himselfSINGING SINGING WOOD TIRES It was not until well into the stretch that Rose Cross was really asked to run There with Singing Wood through he drew away to complete the mile and a quarter in 207 with the greatest ease From there to the finish he simply galloped along to cross the line winner by seven lengths in 232 He had shown faster time in his preparation for the running and he was well within him ¬ self all the way Singing waySinging Wood which is probably only a miler was quitting badly in the stretch and Growler readily caught him and beat him by two lengths for second place Carry Over was last after he had filled his pacemaking as ¬ signment and he was beaten by his stable mate Cleves by five lengths but Cleves was four WoodA lengths back of the tired Singing Wood A surprise of the day came in the third race five furlongs claiming dash for juve ¬ niles when both Aperitif from the Howe Stable and Charles Thieriots Day Signal led R R Ashbrookes Back Fence past the line Before the running Back Fence was considered one of the sure things of the program but he had no excuse and wound up beating one of the four that raced Mrs Paul J Foxs Dunfox DunfoxIt It was a good start and Back Fence at once took command to race along next to the rail He was never able to drav away from the small field and at the turn was being closely pressed by Aperitif Then in ¬ side the last furlong Horn went to a drive 1 Continued on thii tysecond paaeJ ROSE CROSS VICTORIOUS Continued from first page in a vain effort to save the day but Aperitif continued to draw away and was home win ¬ ner by a length lengthAt At the end Back Fence tired so badly that Day Signal with a determined rush got up to beat him by half a length for second place Dunfox was at no time a serious contender contenderC C H Knebelkamps Thundertone ridden by C Rainey was an easy winner of the final race of the day He assumed com ¬ mand at the start drew away and at the finish had a wide advantage over Syriac which in turn led home Sunny Tom
