THREE IN A ROW FOR MALOLO Easily Defeats Rizla in St Louis Star and Times Handicap Big Crowd at Failmount Park Despite Hot HotWeather Weather Southland Toy Wins WinsOpening Opening Race COLLTNSVILLE 111 June 23 Malolo B B Johnsons crack sprinter made it three in a row at the meeting when he took the St Louis Star and Times Handicap feature race on the program at Fairmount Park today over the six furlongs route with E E Majors Rizla the only filly to sport silks in the race a close second and Our Justice third thirdThe The winner followed Overshoes going down the back stretch and J Hernandez who had the mount on the Johnson gelding went to the front when ready He opened up a good lead turning into the stretch with Overshoes second and Pat C holding third place They raced this way until pass ¬ ing the eighth post when Rizla came with a rush on the outside and almost wore the winner down in the drive Our Justice was another to race wide in the stretch and he was going fastest of all in the final stages stagesEight Eight mediocre platers met in the opener at a mile and seventy yards and the winner turned up in J M Hubbards Southland Toy favorite in the betting which got up in the final strides to defeat Sis Largo Miss M Lutz was third thirdThe The winner ridden by D Edwards fol ¬ lowed Sis Largo the entire distance and en ¬ tering the stretch came to the outside and gradually wore her down downIn In one of the best races of the meeting H C Butts threeyearold Chilla Lee gained a hard earned victory in the second race which was for threeyearolds and older at five and a half furlongs Showcase was second and Threat saved third thirdThe The winner always in contention moved up to the leaders entering the stretch wore down Roycrofter Wingo and Showcase in the last sixteenth and opened what looked like a commanding lead in the last fifty yards but tired badly near the end and out ¬ lasted Showcase by a half length Threat raced wide throughout and was going fast ¬ est in the stretch but failed to get up for second place by a head while his advan ¬ tage over Wingo was only a half length lengthPortcodine Portcodine the sixyearold son of The Porter made a show of his opponents in the third race for threeyearolds and over which was run over the six furlongs route Bob Up was second and Tennywood finished third thirdThe The winner was ridden by H Manifold and he allowed Tennywood to set the pace in the first quarter On the far turn Port ¬ codine went to the front and had little com ¬ petition after entering the stretch where he won with much to spare spareAn An added feature was the playing of the Falstaff Brewery German band led by Wil ¬ liam C Maehle which paraded through the ground before the opening race and held forth in the clubhouse during the first four races The band made a big hit with the halfholiday throng when it paraded on the track after the running of the fourth race which honored the band bandIt It was warm again today the warmest day of the meeting but the patrons from St Louis and surrounding territory did not let the hot weather keep them away from the good eightrace program arranged by rac ¬ ing secretary R A Leigh
