EASY FOR SPRINGSTEEL 30000 Watch Labrot Gelding Win Rockingham Feature Takes Early Lead and Maintains It Itto to Finish Mr Khayyam KhayyamEaces Eaces Poorly SALEM N H June 23 Thirty thousand race followers coming from all parts of NeV England with a large sprinkling of New Yorkers filled the stands when the field went to the post in the Granite State Handi ¬ cap The crowd would have been even larger had not rain fallen all morning and the sky remained cloudy until about one oclock oclockBy By the time the race track specials ar ¬ rived from Boston the sun was shining arid the beautiful track in the lap of the New Hampshire hills was bathed in the sunshine of an ideal summer afternoon afternoonA A field of thirteen paraded to the post in the Granite State Handicap for the 10000 added purse There was nothing much to the running insofar as the winner was con ¬ cerned S W Labrots Springsteel under the alert riding of the veteran Jimmy Burke assumed command in the run to the first turn and reached the finish with a safe margin over Willis Sharpe Kilmers Dark Winter while third fell to the lot of Tick On racing for the Kentucky sportsman E R Bradley Round Table a stable mate of the winner was fourth fourthGOOD GOOD START STARTThe The start was a good one with Flaming Mamie first out of the stalls Springsteel was away in the first flight and hustled along from his outer position and was soon showing the way Mr Khayyam had left the post well enough but soon dropped back The Labrot gelding opened up a com ¬ manding advantage going down the back stretch while Bamboula was racing in sec ond place Dark Winter had the others headed and Tick On was close up upMidway Midway on the far turn Bamboula began to drop back and the Kilmer fouryearold moved up to challenge for the lead Spring steel was still well clear in the stretch but Burke was taking no chances and roused the son of Sir Greysteel repeatedly and at the close enjoyed an advantage of a length and a half halfTick Tick On had been called on for his best and moved up determinedly but was uh equal to the task of seriously threatening the leading pair pairMr Mr Khayyam showed to such poor ad vantage in the running he was eased up in advance of but one of the starters startersLuck Luck In racing for G L Arvin had the honor of taking the initial offering of the meeting when in a hard drive Bunting Miss triumphed by a nose over Fred Almy at the end of five and a half furlongs This en ¬ gaged the limit field of a dozen starters and just a head back of the leading pair Appomattox was third As the early leaders began to falter hear the stretch the Arvin threeyearold went to the front on the in ¬ side and kept under brisk pressure man ¬ aged to stick it out in determined fashion to withstand Fred Almy AlmyJAZ JAZ AGE EARNS PURSE PURSEJaz Jaz Age showed a flash of his best form in the second He won by four lengths from Chain The latter made a determined ef ¬ fort to reach the leader midway on the turn but was not good enough though hold ing second place safe from the final chal lenge of Distribute DistributeMorning Morning Mail had little trouble in account ing for the Record Purse a dash of five furlongs for juveniles and third on the pro gram The Baroniowned gelding reached the end with a lead of four lengths over Candy Prince from the H T Archibald string and Justa Jones earned the show After Kings Pleasure appeared all over the winner a quarter from the finish the Happy Time youngster began shortening strides and Morning Mail which had been moving up on the outside met with little opposition in his challenge for the 1eacJ Candy Prince after showing keen speed from the barrier lost the lead to Kings Pleasure but came again at the end to take second secondA A stirring duel that lasted the entire length of the stretch came with the running of the Roseben Handicap a five furlongs furlongssprint sprint that engaged seven shifty platers platersBlack Black Hand racing for P F Ratti gained major honors by a head over C V Whitneys High WhitneysHigh Glee while T M Cassidys Universe Universewas was third thirdThe The Roseben was the secondary feature of the brilliant opening day card The Flying Ebony FlyingEbony colt was just showing the way to High Glee but Universe moved up menac ingly on the outside and appeared ready to torace race into command when he began to tire Black Hand was holding on with rare ocurage and though High Glee had him headed momentarily the threeyearold get ¬ ting his head in front once again held his narrow advantage to the finish
