TRY SYMPATHY IS BEST Demonstrates Superiority Over Juveniles at Detroit Accounts for Juvenile Stakes With Phildia Second and Polish Beau Third Big Crowd Out DETROIT Mich June 23 Try Sympathy demonstrated that he was the best of the twoyearolds that could be mustered against him here when he carried Mrs Willis Sharpe Kilmers Fair Fields Stables colors to a handy victory in the Juvenile Stakes fea ¬ ture of a well balanced program at the Fair Grounds this afternoon Phildia carrying the colors of C C Leroy King for the first time was second with L Haymakers Polish Beau third McCarthy completed the field for the five furlongs race that was worth 1720 to the winning owner and wound up in last place placeThe The crowd estimated at 15000 viewed the sport which was decided under clear skies and over a fast track trackDespite Despite the small field the race was con ¬ sidered a championship affair vith Phildia which had beaten Try Sympathy in the St Clair Stakes only to succumb to him in the Woodward Stakes meeting the double win ¬ ner Polish Beau for the first time Due to his double stakes victory the first of which was achieved at Arlington Downs Phildia was forced to carry top weight of 122 pounds and was giving away three pounds to Try Sympathy and six to Polish Beau McCar ¬ thy carried the light weight of 113 pounds being favored with the maiden allowance allowanceIn In racing the distance in 59 Try Sym ¬ pathy came within a fifth of a second of his track record recordUnder Under the guidance of the diminutive vet ¬ eran Johnny Mattioli the winner was the first under way but when Phildia and Po ¬ lish Beau went out to show the way the Continued on t oentyninth page TRY SYMPATHY IS BEST Continued from first page little Italian was content to follow in their wake with Try Sympathy Near the final threeeighths Mattioli drove Try Sympathy through next to the rail and he disposed of the leaders in the final furlong From there on the son of Tryster and Simpatica in ¬ creased his advantage but Mattioli took no chances and had Try Sympathy under light urging until reaching the final seventy yards yardsAfter After forcing the pace the first quarter in 22 and the half mile in 45 Polish Beau tired but was not threatened by Mc ¬ Carthy which was far back throughout Try Sympathy a 3 to 2 choice was the favorite over Phildia and Polish Beau equal second choices at 9 to 5 5Beau Beau Tod registered the second victory of his career and the first this year when he was ridden out in accounting for the Center line Purse for threeyearolds nonwinners of two races Nocturnlabe was second and Fretful third thirdRacing Racing back to his last winning effort F A Carreauds Sea Fox was a driving and surprise winner of the Ben Bernie Handicap which served as the sixth race and sup ¬ porting attraction C V Whitneys favored Elf Lock was second with the Three Ds Stock Farms Strideaway third thirdRidden Ridden by Tommy Luther the winner carrying 109 pounds raced into the lead before reaching the first turn and disposing of Sun Apollo when he threatened leaving the back stretch drew away to a clear ad ¬ vantage Elf Lock came to the outside in the stretch to beat Strideaway and was threequarters of a length back of the win ¬ ner and two lengths before Strideaway which beat Rip Van Winkle a half length Gay Monarch second choice to Elf Lock in the wagering retired after threequarters Sea Fox covered the distance in 139 139Bon Bon Champ scored the second win of his career and the first of the meeting when he carried Mrs A M Creechs colors to a surprise triumph over seven other juve ¬ niles in the first race While the well regarded Pish Tush was the first under way C Parvin lost little time in sending the winner into the lead After drawing away to a good advantage Bon Champ held on gamely to finish with threequarters of a length advantage over Imperial Jack which beat Jim X four lengths for the second award Pish Tush was never a factor factorUnder Under a well judged ride by apprentice F Mauro Mrs E W Levys Mature got up to beat the well backed Inflate in the third race Come Seven was third Never far back of the pace of Gene D and Inflate for a half mile the winner came outside the lead ¬ ers in the final furlong of the six furlongs dash dashAfter After outbreaking his opponents Inflate was saved when Gene D rushed into the lead and following the pace under strong restraint took command in the stretch At that stage however Mature was after the leaders and he was drawing away at the finish finishA A close finish climaxed the second race when Swifty got up to beat Princeton a neck for the major portion of the purse Morsel a 17 to 10 choice was third thirdA A small field of eight contested the event and after Princeton and Morsel had raced head and head to the stretch the winner came around the pair to gain his award After saving ground in the drive Volwood was caught in close quarters near the fin ¬ ish and H Callahan was forced to ease him
