Top Row and Trumpery Head List Each 1 With 122 Pounds High Glee Follows With 121 Fifty-Nine Horses Eligible. Top Row, the four-year-old bay colt that carried the silks of A. A. Baroni to a new world record of 1:42 for a mile and a six- 1 teenth at Bay Meadows last fall, and that 1 shapes up as one of the most dangerous members of the handicap division of 1935, was Wednesday assigned top weight of 122 pounds for the ,000 Chicago Handicap, the 1 six furlongs dash, for which fifty-nine j horses were nominated, the opening feature -of the thirty-one day meeting at new Wash- j ington Park, which gets under way Satur- J day. It is likewise the first example of the i new policy which guarantees a stake with at least ,000 in added value on each Satur- : day and holiday of the Chicago major meet- ings. Racing secretary Charles McLennan gave -C. V. Whitneys Trumpery an identical im- : post of 122 pounds, and let C. V Whitneys four-year-old filly, High Glee, in with 121 t pounds to make her the real top weight of ; the field. . ; With weights for the real contenders close enough together to promise an inter- : esting race, one of the largest fields ever : seen at a Chicago track is in prospect for : the stakes first running. An unusually large percentage of the horses nominated for the fixture are already on the grounds and working at Washington Park, and Homewood officials would not be surprised to see as many as twenty thoroughbreds sent out after the ,000 feature. Of the higher weighted horses Top Row, Bien Fait, Evergold, Isaiah, Bold Lover, Wise Daughter, Red Wagon, Quatre Bras II. and Clarify are already on hand. The C. V. Whitney string has not yet arrived, but is expected to come in before the meeting opens. Both High Glee and Trumpery are probable starters. An unusually attractive card has been arranged for opening day, and one of the largest throngs of the season is expected to turn out. They will be greeted by numerous improvements, installed at the order of the tracks new president, John P. Harding, in his drive to make Washington Park the most modern race course in the world. The outstanding change, of course, has been the installation of a giant totalizator of the latest design, in which have been incorporated all of the improvements that have been developed in the building of seven previous totalizators at leading American tracks. An infield board, much larger than that at Arlington Park, has been installed at Washington Park. All information amount wagered in straight, place and show pools has been assembled upon the single board, which is visible from every part of the stands and clubhouse. Selling machines to the number of 150 have been connected, and will be fully manned for opening day. In addition to the former windows in the betting rings in both grandstand and clubhouse, two new batteries of machines have been added. One is at the top of the clubhouse stand, and the other is centered in the grandstand. The object of the additions is to permit racegoers to wager without journeying down to the betting ring. Everything is ready for the opening, and the gates could be unlocked today. Admission at Washington Park this season will be for grandstand and for clubhouse, with the track absorbing all taxes. Complimentary badges will not be issued. All stables at Washington Park were filled yesterday after the arrival of a special train of nine cars of horses from Churchill Downs. Later arrivals will be stabled at the nearby Lincoln Fields race course. In all there will be approximately 1,100 horses at the two tracks for opening day.
