SWIFT STAKES TO MANTAGNA Carries Silks of Maemere Farm Sfa hie to Victory at Belmont. Park. y -i Exhibit and Nautch Finish Second and Third, Respectively Smallest Crowd of Meeting:, Due to Wet Weather. NEW- YORK, N. Y., June 4 The Swift, .one of thp minor stakes of the sprang meeting- at Belmont Park, was decided this afternoon, and Mantagna, a three-year-old from which much had been expected this spring, carried the Maemere Farms colors to a driving victory. Ridden by Litzenberger, -his margin of victory was a-length and a Tialf over Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Exhibit, while a matter of inches back in fhird place was the Howe Stables Nautch. Battling hard in fourth place and finishing fast was G. H. Bostwicks Ariel Cross, lapped oh Black Gift, from the Brookmeade Stable, and the Greentree Stables Plat Eye: - The event was at seven f urlongsfi ,and brought together a field of nine.. ,Two early Withdrawals were posted, Thorsqn .being rer :served for the smaller field of the. fifth, -and :Alf red Vanderbilts Gum. To offset these J. E. Widener added his Silversmith, whicfi raced second Monday back pf. G0I4. Foam.. The race was run over a fast track; but tinder disagrdeable overhead conditions. sA-steady drizzle had a decided effect on the T attendance, which was the smallest of the meeting: : There was some delay at the post in the Swift due to the fractious behavior of Mantagna and Pompeys Pillar. The start was a good one and Plat Eye, breaking from the inside, was sent into "command at drice. Exhibit and Nautch went along after him while Silversmith, Mantagna and Esposa were racing lapped on each other, with Ariel Cross, after being shuffled tbacjc, bringing up the rear. Rounding the far turn there was no change in the -early positions, and it. was xiot until the stretch turn was reached .that there was a change. Litzenberger elected to steer to the outside, and he was followed out by Black Gift Plat Eye, beginning to feel the effects of the early pace, dropped back, and then Exhibit drew" away. The latter had a short-liyed command and, when challenged by Mantagna, tired. In a drive, he managed to outlast Nautch, which came through on the inside. The winner raced the distance in 1:23, a creditable effort.." . The Sanford Stud Farms, which shattered precedent this spring by journeying to Belmont Park, .from winter quarters, at- Anisteiv dam, N. -, for-the first meeting iurhished-the winner-of -the Fairmont, a steenlechase-race at two miles. Ridden by Wj N. Ball, Golden Meadow, shook off- his opponents when ready, and at the finish had a commanding advantage. Teakwood, which races for H. B. Langdon, was the one to race to second place, while a distant-third-was the Brookmeade Stable!s National Anthem. The winner and Tanaringo paraded postward on-feyeh terms in pre-racepeeulation. Tanaringo, however, performed poorly and was never a factor, and when pulled up after the finish showed signs of lameness. Jack Howard accounted for his first rape in Now York when Ebony Lady, ridden by W. D. Wright, was an.. easy winner of, the., final race of .the day. .Dominating the race, throughout, this miss led home Jack Mc- Phersons Glastonbury, while in third place was G. W. Ogles Cristate..
