APPRENTICE H. R. SMITH DIES Montreal Boy, Injured at Rockingham Park May 14, Suffers Relapse and Passes Away. SALEM, N. H., June 4. Suffering a relapse yesterday which returned his name to the danger list, Herbert R. Smith, Jr., of Montreal, seventeen-year-old apprentice, died shortly before midnight at the Lawrence General Hospital after physicians, who treated him for a badly fractured skull, had believed him to be improving. The young rider, who celebrated his seventeenth birthday last Friday by sitting up for the first time, sustained his injury at Rockingham Park on May 14 when he was thrown from Golden Effort. He fractured his head badly in the fall and at the time of his admittance to the hospital his condition was very critical. He rallied satisfactorily from an emergency operation, however, and hospital surgeons began to puzzle over his fortitude, which was believed to be the only thing that was pulling him through. When interview last Friday, the boy was in excellent spirits in anticipation of an early discharge from the hospital. It was believed at that time that he-would be sufficiently improved by last Sunday to permit his removal and everyone believed him out of danger and on the road to recovery. A slight change in his condition Sunday, however, necessitated his remaining at the hospital. His condition grew worse yesterday afternoon following a relapse and he continued to fail up to the time of his death at 11:50 oclock last night. At his bedside when he died were the boys parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert R. Smith of Montreal, who have been with him almost constantly since his injury caused them to make a flying trip to this city from their home. The youngster was extremely popular with the riders and fans at Rockingham Park. His death will be mourned by his many friends in this section of New Eng-land.
