Darh, a beaten bdds-ori choice in his Tast trip" postward, made amends for Jthat dull performance by carrying the. silks of C- V. Whitney to victory in the Hampton Beach, Claiming . Purse, over six .furlongs. The Hampton Beach engaged the small field of five to race six furlongs, and each of the contestants was entered under a claiming value of ,000. Mrs. W. C. Weants Wise Anne, after setting practically all the pace, raced into second place .a neck before Golden Fate, from the Apache Stable. Bright Phantom was fourth apd Crazy Jane last to complete the journey. After the running the winner, a five-year-old son of St. Germans and. Maud. Muller, was led to. a. new5 barn, being claimed by Mrs. J. L. Wilson for the record . claiming price of the meeting; Alfred Robertson rode the winner in confident fashion, permitting the son of St. Germans "to settle into his- best stride in the middle of the track during" the run through the back stretch: Wise Antf for the initial quarter mile, was setting the pace while undera steadying hold, fright Phantom was close up, then came T Crazy Jane, while the winner had but Golden Fate headed. After swinging around the far turn Robertson made his first move on the Whitney representative and began to move up steadily. Near the stretch -turn it was still Wise Anne that" showed the way, while Golden Fate had moved up stoutly on the Inside and, benef ited by a great saving of -ground, had moved into second place. In the stretch The Darb was asked for improved speed. He began cutting down the leaders advantage with every stride and, at the sixteenth post, was on even terms with the Weant filly, to draw clear at the finish. Wise Anne, holding on tenaciously, managed to hold on long enough to stave off Golden Fate. " The Darb was backed into odds-on favoritism, returning u mutuel of 3.50 for the usual investment. Though there were threats of rain early in the afternoon, it had little effect oh the attendance, arid a crowd quite up to the usual week-day standard was present.- Platers of the cheaper grade met in the first offering, which brought them together under conditions that -called for those that had not won since the opening of themeet- ing. It proved easy for Sun Teatime to register by two lengths over .Queen Vic .at the end of six furlongs. Just a head farther back, Queen Helen! Yds third before Energetic Boy. " . Dignitary, a half-brother to the good performer, Teralice, proved the beskof a. dozen platers that met in the second, a dash at five and a half furlongs for non-winners this yearl Diie?to the-?weir judged handling :by Stout, Dignitary made1 his way:s up -when the leaders swung to the outside" in the stretch arid closing inr determined fashion,, wore down. Cash Surrender and" beat him to the line by. a half, length. Cash Surrender fell heir to ihe lead when St. Nick began tiring but despite the best effort, of Silvio Coucci was .unable to cope with the closing charge of the winner.
