I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 MEMORY BOOK, Chestnut Colt, by St. Germans Memento, by Pennant; Property of Greentree Stable; Has Not Made His Three-Year-Old Debut but Has Been Working Exceptionally j Well at Belmont Park. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past i Performances. i By NORRIS HOYDEN. j A Bred like Twenty Grand, Memory Book gives much promise xf developing into another such three-year-old as the son of St Germans and Bonus dill for the Greentree Stable a few years ago. Memory Book, also a member of Mrs. Payne Whitneys establishment, was sired by St. Germans, one of the best stamina-producing stallions standing in this country, from Memento, a half-sister to Bonus. The two-year-old campaigns of the two sons of St. Germans also are very similar. Memory Book was given a late start last season, trainer William Brennan giving him plenty of time to come around to himself before sending him to the post for tho first time. The occasion was at Aqueduct in September in a dash of six furlongs, in which he was the favorite, but he raced greenly and ran unplaced. In his second start, which took place at Rockingham Park, the Greentree colt was a fast-finishing fourth in the Maplewood Handicap at Rockingham Park, Hollyrood being the victor with Grog second and Infidox third. In the field of fourteen, Memory Book was last away from the post, but he made up ground steadily, running over five horses in the final furlong. A few days later, at the same course, Memory Book earned brackets by stepping six furlongs in 1:11 under 105 pounds, easily defeating Tugboat Frank, Grog and James City. He then shifted his activity to Belmont Park, where in the Champagne Stakes he made up some ground in the late stages to finish sixth, but was well beaten by Snark. He sidestepped the Futurity, but appeared in an overnight event before the meeting ended and finished second to Mr. Bones in a dash of six furlongs straightaway, failing to run down the latter colt. At Laurel Park the son of St. Germans found his proper stride. He came from well back in the stretch to score easily in an overnight event engaging only fair youngsters, but his effort was so impressive that he went into the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap as the favorite. This race at one mile just suited Memory Book and ha moved up when called upon entering the stretch to triumph easily, with Maeriel second, Ned Reigh third and Redley fourth in the field of thirteen. Memory Book was not eligible to the Pimlico Futurity and his final start of the season was in the Walden Handicap at a mile and one-sixteenth at Pimlico. The track was muddy, which might not have exactly suited him, but he came through with a strong performance just the same, coming from eighth place at the stretch turn to finish fourth, just a length back of the victorious Ned Reigh. In between them were Challephen and Wise Duke. He carried 114 pounds, two pounds less than the Kilmer colt had up, but more than carried by any of the others in the race. This latest hope of the Greentree Stable for three-year-old honors wasnt as flashy as Twenty Grand as a three-year-old, but he improved as he went along just as did his predecessor. Both displayed aptitude for distance running when youngsters. Twenty Grand, it will be remembered, struck his stride in winning the Junior Champion and then ran a mile in 1:36 to defeat Equipoise in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, only to lose narrow decisions to Equipoise in the Pimlico Futurity and to Mate in the Walden. Memory Book is a big, strong colt that is equally stoutly bred. His sire, St. Germans, a son of Swynford, begets stamina. The dam, Memento, was by Pennant from a daughter of Broomstick, and is a half-sister to the good performers Reminder, Token and Stars and Bars, as well as Bonus. The second dam was a half-sister to the dam of Jolly Roger, the famous steeplechaser. Memory Book will bear considerable watching. Isinglass Insonomy ?
