6 I THIRTEEN NAMED FOR BAY j MEADOWS 0,000 RACE SAN MATEO, Calif., April 22. Thirteen horses, the cream of the Bay Meadows Handicap crop, have been nominated for the 0,000 added Bay Meadows Handicap, to be run May 9. Top Row, Azucar and Special Agent head the list, and when the weights are announced, probably will be found to have been assigned much more weight than their rivals. The horses whose owners were courageous enough to deposit the 0 nomination fee to declare their horses in the contest to compete with the big three include Jovius, Ebony Lady, Campillo, Arson, Bahamas, Mickeys Man, Chartres, Uppermost and Budding Star. Dark Winter, stablemate of Azucar, has also been named. In making public the nominations which closed Tuesday at midnight, general manager William P. Kyne stated tjiat there is a possibility that an additional nomination or two may be in the mail. Nominations sent in that manner would be valid if the postmark is not later than April 20. Top Row, which will draw top weight in the Bay Meadows Handicap, is training at Tanforan and is going along in a satisfactory manner. It is likely that Bert Baroni, owner of the son of Peanuts, will take a more active part in conditioning his horse for the Bay Meadows Handicap than he did for the Marchbank Handicap, in which Top Row was defeated by Indian Broom. Baroni is improving rapidly in the Mills Memorial Hospital, San Mateo. A surprise entry in the Bay Meadows Handicap was Uppermost, a four-year-old mare by Cohort Summit, which was named by Kay Spence. Uppermost, as a two-year-old, accounted for two stakes on New York tracks. Last season she scored three victories in seven starts in good company. Uppermost worked a half mile in :49 at Bay Meadows, Wednesday. She is a mudder. Special Agent is coming along well with his training for the Bay Meadows Handicap and reeled off three furlongs in :37 over the Tanforan track Wednesday. While his stable companion, Indian Broom, is in Kentucky making ready for the Kentucky Derby, Special Agent is preparing to annex the last big purse of the season in the West.
