I LAT0NIA TURF NOTES I — ■ * According to Charles Nolte, track superintendent, the rain here Monday was just what was needed to put the Latonia racing strip in perfect shape for Saturdays opening. Since the last meeting portions of the track on the two turns have been resurfaced to greatly improve its condition. The Brentwood Stable will be represented eight horses during the Latonia session. Heading the array is the handicap performer, Late Date, while the others are Say Murray, Ste. Iris, Ripplealong, Ramola, Pulaski, General Pillor and Attainment. William "Mickey" Harris, one-time jockey, some times starter and some times owner-trainer, will race three horses at Latonia, one of them Auntie Peyton, owned by C. Wv Hay, general manager of the Hawthorne race track. The other two, Dock Beauchamp and Wavy Sea, will carry the colors of Mrs. Harris. Among the veteran riders who will be seen at Latonia is Mack Garner, who long has made his home in Covington, Ky. Garner, in his heyday around Latonia, scored victories in nearly every stake on the Latonia calendar, including the Derby, in which he was triumphant astride Brother Batch in 1921. He won both the Latonia Championship Stakes and the Independence Handicap three times. Incidentally, he won them both in 1922, 1923 and 1924. His winning mounts in the Championship were Rockminster, In Me-moriam and Chilhowee, while he won the Independence twice with Firebrand and once with Actuary. Garner also won the Latonia Cup twice, with H. E. Coleman in 1921 and with Star Jasmine in 1915; the Inaugural Handicap twice, with Lady Madcap in 1922 and with Captain Hal in 1925, and the Enquirer twice, with Actuary in 1924 and with Single Foot in 1927. The Clipsetta Stakes he won with Anna M. Humphrey in 1922. Among the larger stables which will be campaigned through the Latonia meeting is that which is owned by Mrs. R. J. Murphy of Evansville, Ind., and trained by former jockey Otis Clelland. The older performers in the stable are Iceberg, Lady Confucius, Jawapa, Lucy, Lucky Amelia, Stepinanna, Lawyer Brigade, Leeoran, Onthego and Terpon. The two-year-olds are Sailorman, Broadway Bush, Old State, Home Grown, Zelady and Bay Boy. Clelland also has in his charge Spanish Red and the two-year-old Myrna Misstep, owned by Mrs. W. Waggoner, and Amscray, the property of M. Dupuy. Jockey M. L. Fallon, who lost his apprentice "bug" during the Churchill Downs meeting, is the stable rider. ■
