BREVITY WORKS FAST MILE Covers Eight Furlongs in l:393/5 in Preparation for Withers — White Cockade in Faster Time. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 19.— While Joseph E. Wideners Brevity was an eligible for the Swift Stakes, at Belmont Park, today, he was not started in that seven furlongs dash, being reserved for the Withers to be run Saturday. Instead of having a public work for the mile classic, the son of Chance Shot or Sickle, and Ormonde, was sent along during the training hours for a handy mile in 1:39%. This crack colt seems to hold his edge admirably and is fit and ready for the Saturday test when he will meet C. V. Whitneys Red Rain and Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Delphinium, recent conqueror of the Whitney three-year-old. Another notable was under saddle at Belmont Park when Morton L. Schwartz Bold Venture, just back from his Preakness victory, was sent along for five furlongs in 1:02, by Max Hirsch. The son of St. Germans and Possible, while eligible for the Withers, and fit and ready to meet any horse over the mile route, will be reserved for the mile and a half of the Belmont Stakes to be run June 6. Another Withers eligible was under silks when James Fitzsimmons sent Ogden Phipps White Cockade along for a smart mile at Aqueduct. The son of Diavolo and White Favor, has not come up to expectations this season and maybe he will not be started in the Withers, but in this trial he ran his mile in 1:88%, but was being driven out at the end. His fractional time was :472i, 1:13 l:25-f. and l:38-5.
