HAWTHORNE INAUGURAL % 1 1 Plenty of Speed Represented in Field for Opening Stake. Track Record of 1:10 % in Danger, With Such as Ariel Cross, Chancer view and Others Starting. Bringing together some of the countrys fastest sprinters, the Hawthorne Inaugural Handicap, ,000 added stakes feature of Saturdays initial program of the Chicago Business Mens Racing Associations meeting at Hawthorne, may produce one of the fastest three-quarters contests ever staged at the west side course. The Hawthorne track record for the distance is 1:10%, but with such speedsters as Ariel Cross, Corinto, Transmutable, Billy Jones, Whiskolo, West Main, Ding Bin, Rock X., Top Dog, Chanceview and others of little less prominence going after the Inaugural Handicap honors, that mark is in danger, fast as it is. The Inaugural will see Corinto, one of several Chicago-owned entries and one of the stars of Mrs. Emil Denemarks stable, shouldering top weight of 120 pounds. Under this exacting package he will concede two pounds to Ariel Cross, Chanceview and Biliy Jones and seven or more to each of the other contestants. Corinto and Ariel Cross were among the outstanding performers of the recent Churchill Downs meeting, where the former triumphed in the rich and coveted Clark Handicap and Ariel Cross hung up a new three-quarters track record of 1:10%. TWO ADDITIONAL ENTRIES. Two Inaugural Handicap nominations, those of Billy Jones and Nedrow, both in the stable of Thomas C. Worden of Chicago, were not received at Hawthorne in time to be included in the list of eligibles with assigned weights as announced yesterday. The entries, mailed from Louisville, were postmarked May 16 and therefore had to be accepted. They increased the list of entries to thirty-eight and racing secretary J. G Reeder assigned Billy Jones 118 pounds and Nedrow 112 pounds. Other eligibles not already mentioned include Forever Yours, Visigoth, Sangreal, Bright Light, Money Getter, Isaiah, Where-away, Patchpocket, Infidox, Mr. James, Slim Rosie, Recovery, Inscona, Jay Jay, Sky Pirate, Chief Cherokee, Galmica, Headliner, Official, My Auntie, French Boy, Flying Witch, Bushmaster, Captain Joy, Sandstone, Tracker and San Luis Rey. In addition to the Inaugural Handicap, Hawthornes program of stakes for its thirty-one day meeting which inaugurates the Chicago major track season includes the 5,000 added Chicago Derby, for three-year-olds, and to be run on June 20; the 000 added Decoration Day Handicap, for three-year-olds and older, to be run on May 30* the ,000 added Hawthorne Juvenile Hani dicap, for two-year-olds, and down for decision on June 6; the ,000 added Hawthorne Sprint Handicap, also for three-year-olds and upward, programmed for June 13, and the Illinois Owners Handicap, also having ,000 added, and for three-year-olds and upward. The latter stake will top .he program of June 27, closing day of the meeting. Nominations for all stakes close one week prior to the date on which the race will be run, and this system insures not only an active list of entries, but all of the best available performers. TREMENDOUS IMPROVEMENT. With preparations for the meeting almost completed, officials Tuesday found time to more closely peruse the list of horses either already on the scene or due to arrive before Saturdays opening. Comparison with the past few seasons revealed a tremendous improvement in the class of horses and a greater number of the more representative stables than Hawthorne has ever attracted. Among the leading stables already at the West Side course are those of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, P. A. and R. J. Nash, Warren Wright, H. H. Cross, E. F. Woodward, E. R. Bradley, J. E. Hughes, Howard Bruce, E. K. Bryson, W. E. Schmidt, John Marsch, Mrs. Emil Denemark, A. C. Compton, T. C. Worden, C. A. Peck, A. Pelleteri, J. Emerich, Continued on twenty second puge.y HAWTHORNE INAUGURAL Continued from first page. F. M. Grabner, C. E. Bidwill, J. E. Widener, Mrs. P. A. B. Widener, Waggoner Brothers, V. Crane, J. A. Nix, J. J. Coughlin, Mrs. R. R. Russell and H. Herendeen. Fully a score more of equal importance will arrive before Saturday. Some of the more outstanding jockeys on hand include J. Nolan, C. Corbett, A. Robertson, L. Haas, B. James, W. Moran, F. Mauro, E. Arcaro, J. Dunbar, N. L. Pierson, A. Beck and others. According to track officials, seventy-five riders will be ready to accept . mounts by Saturday. •
