Racing at the historic local course begins Saturday and the presence of a number of probable starters in the rich Latonia Derby, to be renewed on that day, among the horses unloaded today added impetus to interest in both the Derby and meeting. Outstanding among the days Derby arrivals was the Kentucky colt Hollyrood. This three-year-old, which at one time during the late winter was the winter book favorite for the Kentucky Derby, an engagement which he did not fill because of a disappointing performance in the Wood Memorial Stakes, arrived from Pimlico, where on Saturday he made a very creditable showing in the Preakness Stakes. He is owned by H. P. Headley, Lexington turfman and breeder, who won the fixture with Handy Mandy in 1927. Hollyrood shipped in good style and is expected to have a good-sized following for Saturdays mile and a quarter race, which carries 5,000 in added money. Hollyrood, however, was not the only Latonia Derby candidate of importance to reach the scene of the race today. From Louisville came several probable starters, among them the steadily improving Song-maker, owned by the Chicagoan, H. H. Cross, whose horses are raced under the nom de course of Tranquillity Farm Stable. This Royal Minstrel gelding, winner of two races at Churchill Downs and conqueror of a smart field Saturday in the Latonia Special at the Louisville track, is seriously regarded as a potential contender for three-year-old honors. In the Latonia Special he conducted himself like a stayer of the first water, and Continued on twenty-second page. LATONIA MEETINGS BEGIN SATURDAY Continued from first page. should he win the Latonia Derby his connections will be eager to match him with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, Bold Venture, and Brevity, Kentucky Derby favorite and runner-up in that race. Bold Venture will not be a starter in Latonias opening day feature, his trainer, Max Hirsch, feeling that the M. L. Schwartz horse had too hard a race in the Preakness to face the Latonia issue with only a weeks rest. Among other Derby horses getting in from Louisville were Mrs. George B. Cox Prince Fellow, the hope for a Cincinnati victory and second to Songmaker in the Latonia Special; Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Silas, another Kentucky entry, and the Arkansas Derby winner, Holl Image, which races for the Chicago-owned Superior Stable. With several other starters in view a field of nine or ten is in prospect for Saturdays race. Also of interest today was the almost definite assurance that the Greentree Stable and C. V. Whitney would have starters in the 5,000 fixture Saturday. The Greentree Stable of Mrs. Payne Whitney plans to ship Memory Book, and Tatterdemalion is expected to carry the colors of C. V. Whitney, and both of them probably will have large followings in the Latonia classic. According to Mose Goldblatt, whose stable is at Latonia and who for many years trained divisions of both the Whitney stables, the horses probably will arrive here Wednesday or Thursday. Goldblatt also said that the Whitneys plan to fill most of the stake engagements for which they have made nominations at Latonia. Two Bob, winner of the Kentucky Oaks in the colors of C. V. Whitney, is considered a certain starter in the Latonia Oaks, to be run here. She was shipped back to Belmont Park from Louisville along with H. P. Head-leys Sparta, which also ran in the Oaks at Churchill Downs. Whether the latter is to be returned here for the Latonia Oaks ha3 not been decided. The track here this morning was heavy, made so by the almost all-day rain of Monday, and training activities were conducted around the "dogs." While many horses were out on the track during the training period, little in the way of speed could be asked of any of them. Several Derby candidates were on the course, Prince Fellow going an easy mile and a furlong in 2:09, and Airforoe, owned by J. P. Hall, traveling a handy three-quarters in 1:22. Meanwhile there promises to be no shortage of horses for the Latonia season. Horses are arriving hourly and among those which will be seen under colors beginning Saturday are some of the most useful performers in training. Among the stables which will be represented here are those of Mrs. J. L. Carrick, Chas. T. Fisher, C. R. Thompson, Mrs. R. J. Murphy, Chappel Bros., A. "Jack" Baker, J. W. Parrish, Mrs. Gus Simone, Mrs. George B. Cox, D. W. Butler, Mose Goldblatt, Thomas C. Piatt, M. M. Riddle, O. A. Bianchi, Kirby Ramsey, F. P. Letellier, John C. Ellis, H. H. Battle, Jack Howard, C. B. Shaffer, H. G. Shoemaker, F. A. Burton and J. S. Ward, J. G. McAtee, J. H. Skirvin, H. R. j i Penney, C. H. Ferguson, S. W. Ward, Mrs. H. H. Hector, Chas. E. Gross, W. E. Smith, J. B. Respess, William Crump, S. G. Baker, B. W. Stivers, George White and others. With the arrival and conditioning of horses going along apace, the racing secretarys office of William H. Shelley was opened for business this morning by Larry Bogenschutz and Fred Burton, who immediately swung into the numerous tasks attendant to the opening. Shelley and other racing officials are due here late in the week. Colonel Winn, who went to French Lick Springs, Ind., following the close at Churchill Downs, will come to Latonia on Friday for the opening the following day and will remain indefinitely. According to Russell Sweeney, resident manager at Latonia, reservations for the Derby and also for the season are going along at a merry clip and indications already are for a sell out of those facilities.
