RUSH WORK AT LOUISVILLE Festival Day Racing Friday Precedes Regular Opening Saturday. Freezing Weather Moderates Permitting Trainers to Speed Up Charges Begin Registering Horses. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 23 Historic Churchill Downs, home of the famed Kentucky Derby, took on a real racing atmosphere today as plans were being rushed to completion for the eight-day autumn meeting which will be ushered in Friday with a Derby Festival program. With steady streams of race horses continuing to arrive from various nearby racing centers, the track was a beehive of activity. The weather, which had been of the freezing variety for two days, had moderated and the track had livened up considerably, giving trainers their first real opportunity to call upon their charges for anything in the way of speed. Fred Burton, who will handle the secretarys duties until the arrival of Robert S. Shelley from Sportsmans Park and thereafter will serve as entry clerk, had his office open early for the registration of horses. James T. Clark was busy issuing owners and trainers badges, and stewards C. Bruce Head and Samuel H. McMeekin were in their offices. The honor of being the first to register their thoroughbreds was shared by two state racing commissioners, William E. Smith, vice chairman of that body, and C. L. Croan. Burtons first thoughts as he" checked over the registrations were of the South Louisville Handicap, a dash which features Saturdays inaugural program. After seeing such names as Theodore Muellers Visigoth Mrs. L. J. Hickmans Dusty Dawn, F p Letelliers Billbo, Mose Goldblatts Gay Monarch, A. B. Letelliers Watercure and C. L. Croan s Crowning Glory he predicted the race would develop into one of the best sprints of the fall season.
