MARS STAR IMPRESSES Reaping Reward and Stable Companion, Military, Not Extended. Gallop Three-Quarters in Easy Fashion Over Drying Out Track at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 23. The arrival of two of the lesser lights in the list of Kentucky Derby nominations and splendid trials by the two Milky Way Farm candidates, Reaping Reward and Military, held the attention of a large number of visitors at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park here this morning. The latest additions to the growing colony of Derby eligibles on the grounds were the Ro3edale Stables Lake View and Mrs. Cecil Gregorys Dead Calm, while Reaping Reward and Military gave observers a sample of their running qualities in a six furlongs gallop over a slow track at the Downs. Lake View and Dead Calm are quartered at Douglas Park. DEAD CALM ARRIVES. Lake View headed a string of ten Rosedale Stable horses which arrived from California, while Dead Calm came in with five stable companions from Hot Springs. Lake View raced with success all winter on the Pacific Coast, while Dead Calms principal achievement was second honors to Grey Count in the Louisiana Derby at New Orleans. Although neither has officially been declared out of the Kentucky race, they still are considered only doubtful starters in the 0,000 race to be run here May 8. Reaping Reward and Military showed to good advantage in their workouts, giving every evidence of the careful preparing they received before their arrival several days ago at the Downs. Reaping Rewards time for the six furlongs was 1:15, while Military was timed three-fifths of a second faster. They went the first quarter in :23, three furlong3 in :36 and the half mile in :48. It was in the final quarter that Military drew up on even terms with Reaping Reward, which, however, does not indicate anything, since both were traveling very handily throughout. Earl Sande was to have worked the H. Maxwell Howard candidates, Sceneshifter and Fencing, but after inspecting the track he decided to wait another day. The track was in fair condition on the back stretch, but the home stretch still was very deep, having failed to dry out much from the recent drenching it received. Instead of setting down his two charges, Sande permitted them to indulge in a gallop once around the mile course. He intends to send them a mile or more tomorrow. Most of the other Derby horses were given slow gallops this morning. Anthony Pelle-teri, trainer of the largest stable here, left hurriedly by plane last night for New Orleans, where his mother was reported to be in a critical condition. Details of her illness were not learned, but fear was felt for her life.
