GERALDS WORK BRILLIANT Furst Candidate Turns in Best Workout of Year Among Derby Eligibles at Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 23. Mrs. W. H. Fursts Kentucky Derby candidate Gerald, whose trainer B. B. Williams passed up working his horse this morning because of the deep condition of the track, turned in a sizzling three-quarters mile trial over a course that still was slow at Churchill Downs this afternoon. With his Derby jockey. Jack Westrope, in the saddle, Gerald traveled the six furlongs in 1:1414 and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:29. Breaking at the five and a half furlongs pole, Gerald went the first quarter in :23, three-eighths in :35, half mile in :47 and five furlongs in 1:01. The trial was all the more noteworthy because Westrope purposely guided the colt extremely wide into the home stretch to avoid wet spots near the rail. The work was one of the best turned in by Derby horses at the Downs.
