CHANCING WINS: BY K HEAD Two Disqualifications and Jacob3 Triple Features at Jamaica. Bleber Campaigner Gets Close Decision Over Courageous Knowing In Calverton Handicap Track Muddy. JAMAICA, N. Y., April 23. Chancing, son of Chance Play and Courtly, racing for Philip Bieber, earned a close decision in the Calverton Handicap at Jamaica today when he defeated Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Knowing in the feature, and third went to A. C. Bost-wicks Upside Down, with Sunport fourth. The track was still muddy from the recent rains and there was a chill in the air that did not make conditions altogether comfortable, but another crowd of good proportions attended the sport. In the feature sprint Knowing was so unruly at the post he was taken to the outside and sent back of the field to start, but this handicap was offset when he was in motion as the word was given and dashed into the lead in a dozen strides. Highpool and Hollu-schickie went after the son of Dunboyne, but Chancing was not far back and in a good position and Wright had him under slight restraint as he held his place. SUNPORT OUTRUN. Sunport had broken well but he was outrun to drop back rather badly in the early racing. Turning from the back stretch, George Rose drew away with Knowing to establish a lead of two lengths and there Holluschickie had enough and dropped back, but Highpool was hanging on well and Chancing was beginning to move up on the outside. Knowing was still clear as he swung into the stretch, but there he lost some ground as Rose went out slightly to seek the better going. Then Highpool began to tire and Wright made his move on the outside with Chancing. The old son of Chance Play came along steadily when called upon and a sixteenth out he was lapped on Knowing. There followed a bitter duel, but Chancing proved best, to have his head in front at the end. Upside Down was running over horses in the final furlong, to be third, only a length and one-half away, and Sunport had gained considerable ground to take fourth. Hirsch Jacobs saddled two in the opening dash at six furlongs and they finished first and third when B. Guths Al Neiman was winner and Mrs. Jacobs Grand Jester was beaten for the place by Mrs. Belmont Evans Stipulate, one of the long shots of the field, while the Jacobs pair enjoyed favoritism. His Nibs was fourth. Gurkha, one of Alvin Untermyers eligibles for the Kentucky Derby and the Preak-ness, was a cantering winner of the second race. This was a gallop at a mile and seventy yards for maidens and the son of Gallant Fox and Maridel, making his first appearance of the year, was much the best of the company. J. J. Morans Merry Pete raced to second place and third was the portion of Armagnac from the Howe Stable, a three-year-old that was making his first appearance under silks. The only other startera were Larrigan and Super John and they followed in the order named. GURKHA SCORES. Gurkha had the inside stall at the start, was away quickly and thereafter it was really no contest. He quickly drew out to a lead of two lengths and was rated along in a safe lead throughout to be winner by five lengths and in hand. Hirsch Jacobs saddled his second winner of the afternoon when he sent ;out Playline in the third under the colors of Mrs. Jacobs. The son of Mere Play, which had a thorough seasoning by winter racing in Florida, led home Joe W. Browns High Mongul and E. B. Smiths Eyota beat Rocky Margot for third. In this race there was an unaccountable support for Little Jock, a three-year-old son of Jock that had never been to the races, but he had no speed and was badly beaten all the way. There came the first disqualification of the meeting in the fifth race, a mile and a sixteenth for. platers, when Risotto, after leading M. Marmorsteins Swift Lad home, was set back for having fouled him through the running. This ruling moved George D. Wide-ners Uallno into the place and awarded third to Chilca. The ruling was made on the complaint of Jackie, who rode Swift Lad, that Shultz, on Risotto, had repeatedly interfered with his mount on the first turn when an attempt was made to send Swift Lad through on the inside. Another disqualification occurred in the mile and a furlong event at the end of the card when P. Bieber"s Peaceful was set back for having crowded Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Glittering inside the final seventy yards. This placed Glittering first and gave Hirsch Jacobs his third winner of the day. By the change in the placing Ukraine was placed second and third awarded Moralist. Play Book was the one to cut out the running, but he was run down by Peaceful before the stretch was reached. In the meantime Glittering was moving up strongly on the inside and he was finding his way through on the inside when Longden went over slightly with Peaceful and Bierman took up sharply to lose by a length and a half.
