BAY MEADOWS OPENS TODAY Speed Handicap Feature of Inaugural Famous "Ringer," Exotude, Named for San Carlos. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 23. Everything was in readiness at Bay Meadows today for the opening Saturday of the popular Peninsula tracks annual spring turf season a season which general manager William P. Kyne confidently predicts will be a record-breaker. Topping an excellent inaugural program is the Speed Handicap, bringing together a crack field of the turfs leading sprinters in a six furlongs battle for a purse of ,500 added. Boxthorn, the big black speed ace from the Janss Brothers stable, is the pre-race favorite but will meet strong competition from the field of thirteen probable starters. Boxthorn was on the track this morning for a final workout, galloping an easy mile. The ex-Bradley star will carry high weight of 117 pounds. Cloud DOr, Sobriety, Exhibit, War Glory, Happy Bolivar, and Brown Jade, all thoroughbreds of intense speed, will see to it that Boxthorn has plenty of opposition and are expected to provide an exciting contest. Completing the field of nominees are LL Greenock, Lady Florise, Faust, Mad Joss, Fair Lead, San Luis Rey, and Wise Alibi. RACE FOR STAYERS. Some of the best stayers on the track will face the barrier in the San Carlos Handicap, one and one-sixteenth miles secondary feature which rivals the Speed Handicap in importance on the program. In this race is Exotude, alias Blue Boot, the stretch running mare with which trainer Earl Beezley hopes to conquer Seabiscuit in the 0,000 Bay Meadows Handicap. Exotude will be making her first start after being discovered to be a "ringer" last winter. Among others named for the San Carlos are Best Bid, Invermark, En Masse, Sarada, Jaber, Coldwater, Asyouwere, Joey, Marv, and Watersplash, all topnotch routers. Manager Kyne predicts a capacity attendance Saturday with a record opening day mutuel play of 00,000. With ideal weather for the meeting virtually a certainty, Kyne looks for new records in attendance, play and class of racing.
