In running one mile and a quarter, the Derby starters will traverse 6,600 feet, one mile being 5,280 feet and a quarter of a mile 1,320 feet, the total, 6,600 feet. The above outline, while not drawn to an exact scale, shows just how many feet there are on the straightaways stretches and how many feet on the turns. The above sketch was drawn primarily to help those who are unable to attend the Derby running to visualize the positions of the horses as the race is described over the radio. In addition the diagram can be checked against Daily Racing Forms chart, published the following day, as the posts where the calls made are clearly shown.
