THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 CLODION, bay gelding, by Pharamond II. Alice Cass, by Peter Quince; property of Walter A.CIodion. Rates highly as a good prospect and may prove to be a stayer of quality. Little heard of him aside from having wintered at Columbia, where it was reported that he had grown and thrived during the cold months. By NORRIS ROYDEN - Among the so-called dark horses among the three-year-old prospects is Clodion, a gelded son of Pharamond n. Alice Gass, by Peter Quince, owned and developed by Walter A. Clodion. He came into promise last fall with successive triumphs in the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica, and the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel, but failed to make good for the talent in the Walden Handicap, in which he went unplaced, as Brooklyn scored over No Sir and Yellow Tulip. Clodion began his racing in claiming ranks, running unplaced in a dash at Belmont Park in May. Put away for two more months, he was beaten in a maiden race at Empire City, after which he was given another two months by trainer Carter before making his third start, which was at Bclmcnt Park in the fall. In this dash of five and one-half furlongs, he managed to run third to Mosawtre and Old Nassau, while beating Sceneshifter and other maidens, and this put him right for his graduation effort a short time later over the same distance down the straight course at Belmont. He made this run in the excellent time of 1:0314 to defeat a large field of maidens, including Jackinthebox and Sceneshifter. Sent against better company in a six furlongs dash at Jamaica, he was unable to stick with the leaders, but was beaten less than four lengths by Advocator, with Juliet W. second, in the time of 1:12. Displaying mud-running ability at the same course while carrying 110 pounds, Clodion stepped three-quarters in 1:12 to take the Remsen by a length and a half over Night Bud as Dogaway was third and Maedic fourth, the last-named carrying 126 pounds. This victory prompted Carter to ship Clodion to Laurel for the Jenkins, and the Pharamond youngster came through with an impressive, performance to add that stake to his credit. Shouldering 110 pounds, he took the lead on the second turn to widen out on his opponents and score by three lengths over Grey Gold, as Bottle Cap, which was giving him eleven pounds, was third, and Rex Flag was fourth. He covered the mile distance in 1:38, which is very good for a two-year-old at Laurel. His Remsen and Jenkins victories caused Clodion to be made the favorite in the Walden, but he was very fractious at the post and he was unable to come through according to expectations, finishing seventh in a field of eight, although he was beaten only about five lengths. His weight was 114 pounds, two pounds less than carried by the victorious Brooklyn. Clodion did no more racing, but he displayed enough last fall to cause eastern horsemen to gain a high opinion of his ability. He at least demonstrated in the Jenkins that he was more than a mere sprinter, although he had no chance to show whether he could have run as well with his weight up. The Carter gelding has wintered well at Columbia and he is well advanced in his training. He is a solid-made horse and sound, but his fractiousness at the post is against him. Clodion is not a thoroughly-bred stayer, his maternal grandsire, Peter Quince, being a sprinter and sire of sprinters, but the second dam was by Light Brigade, and the next by Ben Brush, which is of value. His sire, Pharamond. has yet to produce a good stayer, although his get have done well over the middle distances.
