MATEY WORKS MILE AND AN EIGHTH IN 1:54 HAVRE DE GRACE Md., April 24. Walter M. Jeffords Matey, which was withdrawn from the Chesapeake Stakes when his trainer, Preston M. Burch, decided that the Man o War colt needed additional conditioning, was worked a mile and an eighth between the second and third races. The crowd, which was disappointed In not seeing Matey in action, at least learned that the colt was sound. Matey was caught in 1:54, with the fractional time as follows: :24, :49, 1:02, 1:14 and 1:40. The trial was an impressive one and Matey was in hand all the way.
