NOTED SIRE PHAROS PHAROSDIES DIES IN FRANCE The stallion Pharos dropped dead recently at the Haras dOuilly Calvados France where he had been standing since the close of the 1927 mating season in England hav ¬ ing that year and the previous season heenv located at the Woodland Stud Newmarket His demise is a great loss as he had ap ¬ peared to be wonderfully fresh and well this spring Bred by Lord Derby and foaled on April 4 1920 this dark bay brother to the 1928 St Leger winner Fairway was a son of Phalaris Scapa Flow being the second offspring of this mare by Chaucer from Anchora by the 1896 Ascot Cup hero Love Wisely and belonging to the No 13 family The 1931 Two Thousand and Derby winner Cameronian is the best horse begotten by Pharos but he proved an excellent stallion and besides many other winners also sired the 1932 St Leger hero Firdaussi while his threeyearold daughter En Fraude is con ¬ sidered to be extremely good by that excel ¬ lent judge Faraway In all Pharos con ¬ tested thirty races and won fourteen worth collectively 68470 ending up by securing the Champion Stakes of 1925 Like his sire which dropped dead after serving Princess Sublime on February 28 1931 at the age of eighteen Pharos was although a better one than his sire no great stayer and after seeming to have the Derby of 1923 won half way down the straight eventually got Tun out of it beaten a rather easy length by Papyrus In 1931 Pharos headed the list of wininng sires in England fifteen horses by him securing twentyseven races worth col ¬ lectively 219610 his nearest rival being the fiveyearold Gainsborough which had 171 680 to his credit and is still going strongly
