Here and There on the Turf Wood Song Promising Colt ColtMay May Be Favorite in Juvenile Stakes StakesCount Count Arthur Vamoose Im ¬ press pressThe The Schemer Scores in Betsy Williams The very popular pink and black jacket of Mrs Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable hasnt been very prominent during the past few years but all this may be changed if Wood Song continues as he has started out Wood Song is a compactlyformed gray son of Royal Minstrel and Glade which breeding makes him a full brother to Singing Wood winner of the Belmont Futurity William Brennan brought him out at Belmont Park the other afternoon to oppose eight other promising juveniles and Wood Song breezed to them in winning by three lengths while running the four and a half furlongs in 53 very good time considering the muddy con ¬ dition of the course Taking the lead soon after the start Wood Song led all the way drawing away toward the end while Eddie Arcaro maintained a very snug hold on him himBecause Because of the impressiveness of his vic ¬ tory at the first asking Wood Song may be a very strong favorite to win his next en ¬ gagement which probably will be in the Juvenile Stakes to be run on Saturday After the Juvenile comes the National Stal ¬ lion Stakes in which the Royal Minstrel colt will be called upon to meet the other promis ¬ ing youngsters so far shown in New York They include Dauber and The Chief in the stable of C V Whitney and Great Union owned by Mrs E Graham Lewis Great Union winner of his last two starts over fair company now is at Narragansett Park where he is to run in the Old Colony Stakes Saturday His class may be determined in this event as he will be called upon to meet Huskie Boy a Bull Dog colt which came out of Texas with a very good reputation Al ¬ though he placed second to Dauber in their first appearance under colors The Chief gave evidence of being a firstrate prospect providing that he settles down into a smooth performer Vamoose a son of Blue Larkspur and Eastern Lady for which Henry Guggenheim paid 8500 to add him to his Falaise Stable out of the E R Bradley yearling sale at Saratoga in 1935 qualified for Saturdays running of the Withers Stakes by his victory in an overnight race at Belmont Park Mon ¬ day On top ° f the pace from the start Vamoose went into the lead turning into the stretch only to give way by a few inches to Royal Reigh but through the final furlong of the mile event he drew away in smart fashion to defeat the Brookmeade Stable colt by three lengths In an earlier outing Vamoose finished second to Chicolorado in the Stuyyesant Handicap at Jamaica He was made a yearling nomination to the Bel ¬ mont Stakes and if his performance in the Withers is pleasing enough Vamoose will sport the Guggenheim banner in the Belmont Stakes on the closing day of the meeting Lon Johnson took the blinkers off of Count Arthur in the Ben Brush Handicap at JJelmont Wednesday and theodesaip I Mrs John Hertz stable gave more kindly of his ability than he had at any time during the season If this change hadnt caused the son of Reigh Count and Abbatissa to p jljgrjin h ter he would have been putj der his top weight of 120 pounds Count Ar ¬ thur was rated along smartly by Lester Ba laski as Esposa set the pace to the stretch and then he moved up on the outside to takf 8ffl8f3 ° tt thirtyfirst page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page the lead and to stave off the late bid of Moon Side to which he was conceding five pounds In an earlier meeting at Jamaica over the mile and onesixteenth distance Count Arthur defeated Moon Side by a head while giving him five pounds and before that Cleveland Putnams horse received the verdict with eight pounds in his favor The additional distance also may have proved helpful to Count Arthur as the Ben Brush was at a mile and one furlong The Schemer daughter of Challenger TJ and Granny by Sweep which had gained her first victory no later than last Saturday jumped into prominence with her triumph In the Betsy Williams Stakes Narragansett Parks offering for threeyearold fillies De ¬ spite the fact that she was unable to win in her seven outings as a twoyearold the form shown by The Schemer in her maiden victory which also happened to be her first start of the season was sufficient to cause her to be made the second choice to Miss Dolphin in the Betsy Williams Moving up gradually as Miss Dolphin set a steady pace The Schemer went to the front in the final sixteenth of the mile and seventy yards af ¬ fair to defeat the favorite by a length In ¬ cidentally it may be noted that the dams of The Schemer and War Admiral are by Sweep a con ofBnruh j tx
