Washington Park Offers Most Attractive Opening Program RUNAWAY TARGET BEST King Racer Accounts for LaGrange Purse at Aurora J Dyer Takes Days Saddle Honors Fast Roamer and Dark DarkRoamer Roamer Earn Purses AURORA 111 May 20 Improved weather and track conditions for the presentation of this afternoons program of eight races at the Fox Valley Jockey Club course re ¬ sulted in some sensational racing on occa ¬ sions and was witnessed by a large gather ¬ ing of turf enthusiasts enthusiastsThough Though a light drizzle came down during the morning constant work on the track and a warm sun that appeared was re ¬ sponsible for the track being in a good con ¬ dition for the staging of the majority of the races on the card cardSprinters Sprinters engaged in five of the eight races on the fare but the LaGrange Claiming Purse at a distance of a mile and a six ¬ teenth served as the sixth and best race on the card Seven went postward on this occasion and the winner turned up in H D Kings Runaway Target which was making her initial start for her new owner having been acquired via the claiming route in her previous engagement Hardware finished second a neck behind the winner while Caw Caw landed the show money moneySUPERB SUPERB RIDING RIDINGApprentice Apprentice Willie Cook had the mount on Runaway Target and handled the fiveyear old bay daughter of Runantell Targeteer in superb manner to gain the verdict in a pho ¬ tograph finish Runaway Target displayed the most speed from the break and domi ¬ nated the race while under light restraint restraintHardware Hardware which was in a contending po ¬ sition from the outset but held off the lead ¬ ers made his move as the field swung around the stretch turn and went about the task of catching the leader leaderAs As apprentice Cook applied the whip to Runaway Targets flanks the bay mare re ¬ sponded in courageous fashion and fought it out down to the finish line to cross it with a margin of a neck and reward her supporters with odds of 3460 for each 2 2Showing Showing a liking for the slow footing Joe Neels chestnut filly Harem Queen came from a long way back in the stretch to easily account for the lions share of the purse in the opening race on the card a six furlongs dash in which nine started House Baby was a length and a half in back of the winner Continued on thirtieth page RUNAWAY TARGET BEST Continued from first page at the finish while Sun Voter took down the third portion of the purse The winner was overlooked in the betting and paid 2660 for 2 2PARAWICK PARAWICK THROUGHOUT THROUGHOUTForm Form players came into their own in the second race which was over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth when P L Kelleya Parawick showed the way from start to fin ¬ ish to defeat Jim Ned by the margin of threequarters of a length in a driving fin ¬ ish Probationer finished in third position The ability of jockey Louis Buddy Guymon to put up a strong finish was the deciding factor in the race The winner paid 440 for 2 wagers in the mutuels mutuelsJ J E Miller Illinois turfman saddled the winner of the third race in Fast Roamer which took the lead after going the first quarter and drew away to win with some ¬ thing in reserve Three lengths behind the winner came Leeoran while third money went to Raffles Lad Jockey Joe Dyer vet ¬ eran Kansas reinsman had the mount on Fast Roamer and after getting his charge away from the starting gate with the lead ¬ ers overtook Judge Primrose without diffi ¬ culty and remained on the head end of the procession to the finish The winner paid 1180 for 2 straight investments investmentsTHIRD THIRD FOR J DYER DYERJake Jake Miller make it two winners in a row in the fourth and it marked the third success of the day for Joe Dyer as Dark Roamer came from behind to take the main portion of the purse in the five and a half furlongs dash Losweep finished second a neck be ¬ hind the winner while Monie Blue drew up in third position Losweep was away to a fast start and set the pace for the greater part of the race but was unequal to the task of warding off the stretch challenge of Dark Roamer RoamerA A close and thrilling finish was provided for the spectators in the fifth event another sprint which was taken by Lo The five yearold brown mare came from behind in the final quarter to gain the decision and outstayed Grandmas Boy to win by a nose
