BIG ARCADIA HORSE COLONY Ban of Juvenile Racing Makes Boom for Older Horses. Fourteen Hundred Campaigners Available for Santa Anita Meeting Opening on December 3L ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 23. Approximately 1,400 horses, including the majority of Americas outstanding thoroughbreds, are on hand to take part in one of the biggest meetings of the nation, which will get under way Saturday, December 31, for a session of fifty-two days. Conditioning the horses are many of the countrys leading trainers, who are prepping their charges for the various : events slated for decision at the beautiful; Santa Anita course. i The banning of two-year-old racing in this region until May 1 enabled the management to allot more space to the older performers, which means the events offered will engage larger fields to compete for the purses, which this season will be ,500 minimum. The boost in purses is a tribute to vice-president Charles H "Doc" Strub and his associates, who have always displayed a liberal policy with the horsemen. There is no change in the official personnel, aside from the preating of a new board of stewards, which title is conferred upon the former patrol judges. This has been approved by the California Horse Racing Board, which has to pass on all offijeial appointments regarding officials. Christopher J. FitzGerald will be the presiding steward, while J. Kingsley Macomber will act as steward representing the California Horse Racing Board. Others who will be stewards but will be stationed at various parts on the course are : James F. Gallagher, William A. Quigley and James C. McGill. Edward Thomas, who has achieved much success and made quite a reputation for himself in past seasons by his speed and efficiency in dispatching the fields, will again be the starter and will commence assembling his schooling classes next week, providing weather permits. He will use the Santa Anita Gate, not employed on any other track. The mutuel department will be under the management of Mort Shaw who, by the way, is among the best in his profession. Shaw f has conducted the mutuel department since Santa Anita became one of the nations major courses.
