Witness Brilliant Race ARLINGTON HEIGHTS HI July 22 Until they actually saw it happen hardly anyone in the crowd of more than 40000 persons thought Johnstown could lose the Arlington Classic at Arlington Park this after ¬ noon He did lose it though and he was soundly beaten as William L Branns Preakness winner Challedon put down as strictly a mudder raced to a brilliant victory in the eleventh running of the stake before one of the largest gatherings ever assembled at the palatial North Side course Johnstown had everything in his favor He had a lightning fast track and he was fortunate enough to draw an inside post position which was ideally suited to his early speed But the best he could do was to finish third at the end of the mile and a quarter test in which the Millsdale Stables Sun Lover finished second HarryRichards Challedon ably ridden by Harry Richards and carrying 126 pounds ran the ten furlongs in 202 neither the fastest nor the slowest time for the Classic and won by a good neck as Sun Lover beat the Belair Studs pretender to the years threeyearold championship six lengths for second place placeHEATHER HEATHER BROOM FOURTH FOURTHJohn John Hay Whitneys Heather Broom was fourth leading the Woolford Farms Tech ¬ nician the only other contestant Heather Broom finished two lengths behind Johns ¬ town and one before Technician TechnicianThe The Brann colt one of Johnstowns most persistent rivals all year earned 35600 representing first money of a gross prize of 49600 and a beautiful gold replica of the famous English Coronation Cup Brann was on hand himself to accept the trophy and to share with his splendid thoroughbred the plaudits throngJohnstown of the throng Johnstown had no other excuse for defeat than that he ran his race He set a burning pace whistling as he went He ran the first quarter in 23Vs threeeights in 35 half mila in 47 fiveeighths in 59 threequarters in 111 seven furlongs in 123 and mile in 136 and that performance simply left him leg weary Challedon meanwhile was a trailer for almost a half mile He began to move up thereafter on the inside where he was fortunate enough to find racing room and when he made his run at Johnstown entering the stretch the Belair colt had nothing with which to meet the challenge While Challedon was doing his running next the rail Sun Lover was making his move on the outside and he too was not long in passing the faltering Johnstown once they straightened up in the short stretch stretchRICHARDS RICHARDS ON WINNER WINNEROnce Once in front Challedon received a power ¬ ful ride from Harry Richards who fairly lifted his mount across the line of finish Had J E Oros who handled the Millsdale horse made his move a trifle sooner he might have been returned the winner but no blame can attach to Sun Lovers rider for he also put up a splendid exhibition Continued on thirtyfourth page CHALLEDON FURNISHES UPSET IN CLASSIC Continued from first page When Johnstown had enough he dropped back quickly and the crowd which made him a 1 to 5 chance in the betting gave out a groan as he hauled down his sails sailsTechnician Technician made a bold gesture at the outset when he essayed to keep pace with the Belair star and he did race head and head with the favorite to the club house turn There Johnstown drew away but Technician remained in second place until they reached the second turn Here the Woolford colt gave up his hopeless task to leave others to fight it out to the end endHeather Heather Broom never did figure promi ¬ nently in the running and that he was able to finish fourth instead of last was due more to Technicians tiring than to his own running qualities qualitiesTHIRD THIRD CHOICE CHOICEChalledon Challedon was the third choice in the betting Sun Lover being second and paid 2920 for 2 Through his spectacular tri ¬ umph the son of Challenger II and Laura Gal increased his years earnings to 114310 114310The The Classic was run under cloudy skies and for a time it was feared that the race might be run on a track other than fast Early in the afternoon a light shower fell and fans began to speculate on the condi ¬ tion of the racing strip by the time the fea ¬ ture would be called postward for it was un ¬ derstood that Johnstown a notably poor mudder would not be asked to negotiate any but a fast track As it turned out however the course was as fast as it has been all season seasonJohnstown Johnstown whose defeat was one of the most stunning upsets in a major stake in several years deprived his owner William Woodward of his fourth triumph in Arling ¬ tons crowning stake The Woodward colors previously had been carried to victory in the Classic by Gallant Fox Omaha and Granville GranvilleBET BET 100049 ON RACE The crowd which might even have been larger but for the threatening weather which prevailed before the races began wagered 100049 on the Classic Stakes and of this sum 66777 was bet on Johnstowns chances The days total mutuel turnover it was said would exceed the handle for the same day a year ago agoThe The principal supporting race was the Flying Scot Purse a dash of five and one half furlongs for twoyearolds and it re ¬ sulted in a popular triumph for Woolford Farms Quenemo ridden by Warren Yar berry This juvenile son of Insco raced past the pacemaking Charitable approaching the final furlong and drew away to win with three lengths to spare His time for the distance was 105 a sterling performance performanceCharitable Charitable had a high turn of early speed and held on fairly well in the drive but was no match for the Woolford colt He was good enough to be second however another three lengths in front of Rapid Way per ¬ forming as part of an entry with I Do Believe BelievePurple Purple Wrack representing Mrs I H Parke raced to a hardearned victory in the seven furlongs sprint which opened the festivities This fouryearold son of Petee Wrack was on top of the pace to the turn and then assumed command himself He drew into a clear lead on the stretch turn but had to be driven out by Edward Elam to hold Migal Fay safe Boston Sound which had made the pace until the winner came along was third wtih Tellwhy next The winners margin was a head and thosa who supported him in the mutuels received 1880 for 2 2RONDELtER RONDELtER DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSRondelier Rondelier the favorite turned in a very poor effort racing far back all the way Whatever chance Isolene might have had was dissipated when she was sent into a blind switch and forced back sharply going down the back stretch stretchThe The second race also contested at seven furlongs saw Mrs Elizabeth Ores Water cure slip through next to the rail entering the stretch and charge to victory by a head The horse was handled by Mrs Ores son apprentice George Oros Ebony Boy was second Copper Lad third and Blue Sheets next in the field of nine The latter was the favorite Ona Boy had the most early speed here and showed the way for five eighths but then he began to get legweary and dropped back steadily Pay Check also tired in the drive after forcing the pace to the final quarter
