CALIFORNIA DATES DELAYEi Claude S Parker Resigns Post 01 California Horse Racing Board Henry Potter Russell Rumored Ready t Quit Too Allotment of Winter Dates DatesCause Cause of Dissension INGLEWOOD Calif July 22 Governor Olson must get together a new horse racing board before the California racing dates for 1940 are allotted Following a meeting of the board Friday evening to which the ques ¬ tion of racing dates came up for discussion Claude S Parker one of the new members of the commission resigned and it was re ¬ ported Henry Potter Russell a holdover from the board named by former Governor Merriam would follow suit suitParker Parker stated that his action was brought about because of political interference with the board and was due directly to a dispute of racing dates to be given the southern tracks next year He believes that Santa Anita and Hollywood Park should be given equal consideration and that winter and summer dates should be divided between the two parks parksPARKERS PARKERS POSITION POSITIONParker Parker who has been a firm supporter of the California Breeders Association made it clear that he accepted the commission on the horse racing board at the earnest re ¬ quest of his longtime friend Edward R Young chairman of the board and wishes it known that no difference of opinion con ¬ cerning the policies of the board has ever arisen between Young and himself himselfRussell Russell who has advocated a fortyseven day meeting for Santa Anita in 1940 is re ¬ ported to have said that he believed his pro ¬ posal would be turned down and that he would wash his hands of the whole affair Russell was appointed by Governor Merriam over a year ago to succeed W A McNaugh ton original member of the board who re ¬ signed Russell has not attended a meet ¬ ing of the board since his return from Eu ¬ rope several weeks ago agoMUST MUST APPOINT TWO TWOThus Thus it may be necessary for Governor Olson to appoint two new members to the board before discussions concerning the Cali ¬ fornia racing dates for 1940 can begin anew It was rumored a couple of weeks ago that Hollywood Park would probably be allotted winter dates for 1940 with Santa Anita either following the Inglewood season or accepting summer dates It was this argu ¬ ment that led to Parkers resignation and the probable resignation of Russell RussellSince Since parimutuel wagering has become legalized in California Santa Anita has had a monopoly on the winter racing dates but it was believed that Hollywood Park after a successful opening season last year in which the daily average handle reached al ¬ most 500000 would be content with summer dates thereby averting a conflict between the two major tracks in the state but things have changed since then thenIt It was thought that the racing dates for 1940 would have been made public a couple of weeks ago and those interested have been anxiously awaiting their publication but it is feared that they will not now be known for several weeks It is a foregone conclu ¬ sion that the meetings on all tracks will bo shortened but just on what dates racing will be conducted on any California track is a matter of conjecture conjectureLOS LOS ANGELES ATTORNEY ATTORNEYParker Parker who resigned from the board Is a well known Los Angeles attorney as is Edward R Young chairman of the board H P Russell maintains an extensive breed ¬ ing ranch in the Carmel Valley and races a string of horses under the nom de course of Double H Ranch RanchWith With but one week to go at Hollywood Park chief interest is centered on the run ¬ ning of the 15000 added Aloha Handicap next Saturday afternoon Cravat the east ¬ ern champion will remain over for the run ¬ ning of the affair which is at one and one half miles
