XAVIER SCORES IN UPSE I Four Lengths in Front at Finish ol Puritan Handicap Honey Cloud Disappoints in Closing Feature at Suffolk Denemark Entry Second and Third BOSTON Mass July 22 Having all the best of it in weights and saving plenty of ground Wesley M Sears Xaxier better than 25 to 1 in the betting stunned a getaway day crowd of 20000 today by winning the Puritan Handicap 10000 added feature race of the final day of sport at Suffolk Downs DownsOnce Once again a New England stake race saw the favorite fail for Mrs A J Abels Honey Cloud the 6 to 5 choice in the field finished out of the money as the Mrs Emil Dene mark entry of Blind Eagle and War Minstrel finished second and third with R A Moores Clodion fourth fourthXavier Xavier was in with only 100 pounds and the fouryearold bay colt by Whichone from Xanthina showed that in winning the 9650 net purse he was not doing much more than running a good race for he went the mile and one furlong in 149 = 5 only a fraction off the track record of 149 set by Seabis cuit two years ago in the Massachusetts Handicap HandicapKROVITZ KROVITZ RIDES WELL WELLXavier Xavier stayed out of trouble with jockey H Krovitz making no mistakes He kept his mount right where he could make his moves then found an opening on the rail and charged through to win by four lengths lengthsXavier Xavier was not given much attention at any stage during the race except in the stretch charge For at the outset Fair fields Stables Lucky Omen Honey Cloud and W L Branns Aethelwold were the ones which set the pace running in that order They were well ahead of the others with Clodion and War Minstrel moving up War Minstrel moved farther along on the rail and as Lucky Omen quit the Denemark cam ¬ paigner moved into the lead with Honey Cloud and Aethelwold still in the running as the field turned for home homeIt It looked as if Honey Cloud now would take command but as the horses went wide Xavier came through all by himself right on the rail It was a mad scramble for the rest but not for Xavier which continued on to victory as Honey Cloud gave way and Blind Eagle turned loose a burst to finish second just a neck in front of War Min ¬ strel strelBROOMORIA BROOMORIA WINS EASILY EASILYComing Coming off a distance race and showing that her flash in that race was an indica ¬ tion of what was to come Frank Hayes Broomoria almost 5 to 1 in a free betting race won easily in the opening brush of the day a six furlongs dash for threeyearold fillies She won with daylight to spare over the favorite Hanna Brothers Prunay with G L Weiss Little Demon third thirdGi7en Gi7en a masterful rideby apprentice W L Taylor Catherine McAuliffes Blue Flame which recently closed a big gap to finish second this time was the winner in the sec ¬ ond race at a mile and a furlong Blue Flame outdrove the favorite Glen Felkners Harrys Dream in the stretch to make the Daily Double with Broomoria in the first worth S8720 Third was H M Babylons River Dee DeeClosing Closing as the favorite in the betting and closing just as fast in the running L E Ogles Adolf came from nowhere in the stretch to win the third race a six furlongs dash overtaking Mrs W Hodsons Fair Time and W H Taverners Story Time TimeAdolf Adolf had all kinds of trouble not break ¬ ing well from the rail position being shut off when he tried to come through and then being forced to como the hard way Yet he won in 111 showing just how much bet ¬ ter he Was than the rest For a time it looked as if he would have nothing as Fair Time and Grandeem broke fast and battled for the lead with Fast Express moving into third place But Grandeem tired and it looked like Fair Time as the rest went wide wideANOTHER ANOTHER CHOICE WINS WINSThe The second favorite in a row came home when the A C C Stables Clingendaal charging in the stretch scored his second straight win and in the same time as before 111 as he caught Leo J Marks Mar Le the pacemaker in the Rockingham Handi ¬ cap a six furlongs dash Clingendaal won by a length with L Vimonts Burgoo Miss taking third money a neck behind Mar Le LeFor For a time it looked as if Mar Le was to be the winner for the Misstep gelding was hustled to the front and fought off chal ¬ lenges from Burgoo Miss Woodsaw and Court Dance Clingendaal was fifth and last yet fairly close to the pace In the stretch Mar Le drew away again but Cling ¬ endaal came down the middle of the tiack and the race as far as the winner was con ¬ cerned was over with seventy yards to go goThe The favorite not only won the fifth race but ran onetwo to take the money both ways as the entry of Mrs D A Buckleys Glorious Time and J Y Christmas Rough Pass both saddled by Christmas ran in that order in the John Alden at five and one half furlongs for twoyearolds Except for the first three furlongs when Multitude was in front but only by a fraction of a length the outcome was never in doubt as Glorious Time waited patiently and then took com ¬ mand
