RECORD CROWD FOR CLASSIC CLASSICAttendance Attendance Best in Recent Years Johnstown Is Drawing Card for forChicagoans Chicagoans Fans Arrive Early ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 July 22 Overcast skies which caused some feeling of concern in the Johnstown camp welcomed what was probably the largest crowd in re ¬ cent years It started streaming into the park long before noontime to witness the eleventh running of the Arlington Classic It is a dark cloud indeed which has no silver lining and the gathering clouds brought with them a cooling breeze which provided the huge throng with relief from the threat of a sizzling hot midJuly day which was inevitable had the sun been able to break through the murk murkSpecial Special trains and long lines of automo ¬ biles brought the crowd to the park early a crowd which seemed to be concerned not j so much with who was going to win the race but with a desire to seo7 the mighty Johnstown run for the time in the Middle i West Not since 1935 when Omaha con ¬ tinued his long string of victories In three yearold stakes by winning the seventh run ¬ ning of the race had Chicago seen a Ken tucky Derby winner in the Classic field but even Omaha didnt have the evident appeal to the masses that the son of Jamestown has hasSome Some idea of the size of the crowd can be gleaned from the fact that as the field went to the post for the start of the third race part of the crowd was still streaming across the infield from the Northwest Highway entrance entranceIt It is doubtful if a more cosmopolitan crowd could be found Representatives from all walks of life thronged the park and the Post and Paddock Club There many of the prominent figures of Chicagos social life made the running of the Classic an occasion for holding luncheon parties
