EMPIRE CITY MEETING GAINS Substantial Increase in Attendance Attendanceand and Receipts Shown Over 1938 New Bridge Big Improvement NEW YORK N Y July 22 The first two weeks of the present race meeting at Empire City according to the tracks report to the New York State Racing Commission shows substantial gains above the corres ¬ ponding two weeks of a year ago and gives proof of the steadily increasing popularity of the course courseThe The attendance for July 2 the opening day of the meeting to July 15 last Saturday was 120531 as compared to 106674 in 1938 an increase of 13857 or 1296 per cent centThe The receipts were 327917 as compared to 287078 an increase of 40838 or 145 per cent centFqr Fqr the twelve days the track will pay the state a tax of 47489 as compared to 43026 for the corresponding twelve days of 1938 a gain of 4462 or 103 per cent centThe The track reports further that 963 fewer nontaxable complimentary tickets were given away this year than last lastThe The track this year has had perfect weather and the added benefit from an attendance standpoint of the Newport Washington bridge from Long Island The bridge reduces the motoring time for Long Island patrons by half an hour and in addi ¬ tion gives them the comfort of roads not congested by heavy traffic
