PITTMAN WOULD DROP TREATY WASHINGTON D C July 22 With the state department noncommittal Senator Pittman of Nevada chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee today threw his support to legislation which would put the senate on record as favoring abrogation of the JapaneseAmerican amity treaty of 1911 Pittman said he favored the abrogation reso ¬ lution sponsored by Senator Vandenberg of Michigan a member of his committee Sec ¬ retary of State Hull has frowned on Pitt mans own resolution which would embargo shipment of American war materials to Japan After examining letters from Hull to the committee on the proposals Pittman said he would drop action at this session of Congress on his embargo measure but would press for consideration of Vandenbergs resolution
