Breeding Operations In Ohio Have Expanded Greatly In Recent Years I Darby Dan Farm Owned by John W Galbreath Is Largest in State StateCOLUMBUS COLUMBUS Ohio June 11 Breeding op ¬ erations in Ohio have expanded greatly in the last halfdozen years An early season forecast was that this year would see more mares bred and more foals arrive than in any year in Ohio in the last forty and this has been borne out outBreeding Breeding farms in Ohio are scattered throughout the state Some are major es ¬ tablishments The largest is John W Gal breaths Darby Dan Farm near Columbus He has more than 700 acres on which are twentysix mares and two stallions The yearlings number nineteen and the current crop of foals already tops a dozen with sev ¬ eral mares yet to foal At Darby Dan Farm are the sires Tommy Boy and Saladin both well represented in the crop of foals Other stallions have been patronized and there are foals at Darby Dan by Sir Gallahad III Omaha Flares Boswell Sriark and Stimulus StimulusMares Mares from the farm have been sent to the courts of these outside stallions again this year Fly Light halfsister to Top Flight foaled a filly by Sir Gallahad III and was mated with Omaha There is also a yearling out of Fly Light by Omaha at Darby Dan Fair Arrow dam of the stakes winner Darby Dan dropped a colt by Omaha this spring and was sent to Stimulus Sun Lily halfsister to the stakes winner Bern ¬ ard F anddam of the stakes winner Darby Dienst foaled a colt by Flares and was re ¬ turned to Jacopo JacopoThe The Darby Dan stallions are well patron ¬ ized from inside and outside the state par ¬ ticularly Tommy Boy which has drawn mares from Indiana Kentucky Pennsylvania Michigan and West Virginia this year He has serviced twentyfive mares this spring springBUYS BUYS FILLIES FOR BREEDING BREEDINGWhen When the Columbus sportsman in 1939 purchased from Arthur B Hancock of Clai borne Farm Paris Ky the yearling fillies Darby Dita Darby Danae and Darby Dulcet it was with the intention to retire them to the brood mare band at the age of four Darby Dita a recent winner is by Chance Shot out of Triumph II Darby Danae win ¬ ner of the Ohio Horse Breeders Association Stakes last fall is by Reigh Count out of Tweet Tweet by Sir Gallahad HI Darby Dulcet is by Gallant Fox out of Mervinia by WrackAt Wrack At the same tirrfe Edward Durell of Col ¬ umbus who maintains a few mares at Darby Dan Farm purchased three other fashion ¬ ablybred fillies from Hancock with the same intention They are Gallant Glance by Gal ¬ lant Fox out of Stony Stare by Campfire Tack Torose by Hard Tack out of Toro Rose by Toro and Whiskachance by Chance Shot out of Circlet by Whisk Broom II Durell is the owner of Eljebred Farm near Columbus but has not set up a breeding es ¬ tablishment as yet yetEdward Edward C Platt of Columbus is second only to Darby Dan Farm among Ohioans in the ownership of breeding stock He has seventeen mares on his Franklin County farm and the young stallion Ptolemy There are seven foals at the farm with more to come Some are by Ptolemy Other sires are represented one of them Pomponius PomponiusPlatt Platt sold four mares last fall and two re ¬ mained within the state One of these is Polyanthus dam of the stake winner Poly cletus and the good winner Princess Athene Polyanthus had been barren for several sea ¬ sons but her present owner Charles L Hen kel Twin Gates Farm Columbus reports that she has been pronounced in foal to Cotton Club this year by the veterinarians HO3ME OF COTTON CLUB CLUBCotton Cotton Club son of Brown Prince II stands at Twin Gates Farm There are six other mares there of which two have foals by Cotton Club Twin Gates Farm is a new establishment The farm is of 190 acres with excellent buildings It was constructed a decade ago as a saddle horse nursery Cotton Club and Ptolemy have yet to send offspring to the races but their get appears to be of good quality and conformation Another Columbus farm is that of R J Dienst president of the Beulah Park Jockey Club It is known as River Divide Farm Dienst reduced his brood mare band to four but they are matrons of quality One is Weapon full sister to the stake winner Shot Put Another is Day Court dam of several good winners The others are Nutting by Peanuts good race winner and producer and the good racer Paper Profits There are six yearlings at the farm and to date three foals The latter are by the stallion Pom ¬ ponius which stands at River Divide and which already is represented by a pair of twoyearold winners this season He had two winners last year in his first Ohio crop of foals foalsL L J Collins of Lancaster Ohio chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission main ¬ tains the extensive Fairfield Stock Farm near Lancaster He quarters several mares there while others are kept at the farm of E K Thomas in Kentucky His yearlings are brought to Fairfield Stock Farm and there are seven there at present Four foals already have arrived arrivedTop Top matrons in the Collins band are the good stake winner Paradisical and Miss Lil ¬ lian dam of the stake winner Bernard F First foal of Paradisical a colt by Ariel and named Aradisical is a twoyearold this sea ¬ son She was returned to the same sire in both 1939 and 1940 1940STALLION STALLION GIVEN TO STATE STATECollins Collins at one time owned the stallion Sun God II but gave him to the state of New Hampshire For the past four seasons he patronized outside sires including Flying Heels now dead Tommy Boy Brevity Bull Dog and Ariel ArielHarry Harry D Shepard of Columbus formerly general manager of Beulah Park has a band of five mares at his Riverby Stock Farm near that city Two have foaled to date One of the youngsters is by Pomponius the other by Ptolemy PtolemyThere There are several other establishments near Columbus including White Star Farm noted as a saddle horse establishment in Del ¬ aware County and the property of Eli Long and Son There the stallion Vamoose son of Blue Larkspur is located and ten mares some of which are boarders There is one foal to date by Vamoose and one by Slave Ship Mares were sent to these two stallions and to Only One this year Another saddle horse farm which has shifted to thorough ¬ breds is the Rosswood Farm of Stanley M Ross Columbus ColumbusNear Near Plain City west of Columbus is the Four Roses Farm of M F Corrigan with the stallion Conventional and three mares one of which has foaled Sunnyridge Farm of Dr L N Jentgen with two mares and one foal to date and Geormaleen Farm of Dr J E Grey with the stallion Bonivan and four mares none of which have yet foaled this spring springE E E Watson maintains a breeding farm near Mt Vernon Ohio where he stands the stallions Morocco and Lester JHe has eight mares of which five have foals by the home SIRES IN NOR IIEASTERNOHIO IIEASTERNOHIOIn In northeastern Ohio several stallions are located At the Buckeye Thoroughbred Farm Doylestown near Akron stands the stallion The Code son of The Porter There are several mares at this farm and two foals have been reported At Twinsburg stands King Bruce son of Teddy He has been much used as a hunter sire in recent seasons and has had few registered foals for racing He is at the farm of Joseph F White An ¬ other stallion in that section is War Glow which stands at Somcrest Farm Mayfield Village near Cleveland ClevelandFor For several seasons H F Bouse main ¬ tained the Deauville Farm west of Cleve ¬ land but he recently sold the stallion Sun melus son of Sun Briar and six mares to John A Kelly of Huntington W Va The mares are all in foa to Sunmelus SunmelusAt At J H Hislops farm near Columbus two of his four mares have had foals this spring both by Tommy Boy The others are in foal to the same sire sireH H R Penney owner of the Penn Villa Farm near Gr nville keeps four mares at W L Nutters farm Georgetown Ky where two have foaled to date There are three yearlings at Penn Villa out of these mares maresDoug Doug Earl Dickason of Chillicothe has a foal by Tommy Boy out of the young mare June Lee This mare has been sent this spring to the stallion Captain Jinks which stands at the farm of judge Garrett S Claypool Chillicothe Ohio Judge Claypool recently set himself up in the thoroughbred breeding industry and also has five mares at his farm two of which have foaled Needle has a foal by Brevity and was sent to High Strung Leuer recently dropped a colt by Granville GranvilleJudge Judge J H C Lyons has three mares at his farm at Poland near Youngstown but reports no foals to date dateCrispin Crispin Oglebay of Cleveland owner of the champion filly Level Best keeps his four brood mares at the farm of Harrie B Scott in Kentucky There are three yearlings at his farm at Gates Mills MillsFOUR FOUR MARES AT SHANNONDALE SHANNONDALEDr Dr M H Powcllson of Zanesville has five mares and reports one foal Depend by Jamestown dropped a bay colt by High Quest This and other mares at the farm are bred to the stallion Gallant Mac which Dr Powellson purchased early this year and now has in service serviceThere There are four mares at the Shanndondale Farm of W J J S Mulvihill Cincinnati and the stallion Jack Horgan The Boston an mare Baikantine recently dropped a filly foal a full sister to the winner Boston Las ¬ sie and was returned to Jack Horgan HorganC C R Aldrich of Spencer has had three oals stood for nine years in Ohio and sent a number of good winners to the races was recently shipped from the Deerwood arm of R A Forster Powell to the Re ¬ mount Bureau in Tennessee
