ILLINOIS THOROUGHBRED PRODUCTION INCREASING FORMER GOLF COURSE CONVERTED INTO STUD STUDHarry Harry Murdochs Creek Side Farm Forging Ahead Home of Laird Contraband and Cannons Roar RoarCOLLINSVILLE COLLINSVILLE 111 June 28 Great strides have been made in the raising of thoroughbreds at Creek Side Farm adjacent to the Fairmount Park race track near here in the past two years Owned by Harry Mur dock a stockholder in the Fairmount Park Jockey Club Creek Side Farm was formerly a golf course owned by he local racing as ¬ sociation and was purchased by Murdock less than three years ago and transferred into one of the best breeding farms in this section Standing at the nursery are the sires Laird Contraband and Cannons Roar The latter is a son of Man o War and so far has sent some useful horses to the races Lairds first get will race for the first time next year when sons and daughters of Con ¬ traband will also be eligible fo competition competitionJames James Fletcher is directing the breeding at the farm He expects much fro the ma trans already making Creek Side their home Murdock is endeavorin0 to purchasve more fashionably bred mares and in a few years hopes to send many winners to the races Raised on the Murdock farm which em ¬ braces ninetysix acres was Inshoot a two yearold which equalled the track record at Fairmount Park during the first week of the meeting meetingMurdock Murdock on the advice of trainer Mark D Livingston constructed a onequarter mile track on the farm which also houses the horses in training Instead of walking the Murdock horses to Fairmount Park for their morning exercises Livingston directs their training n the private track trackFOALS FOALS DROPPED THIS YEAR YEARWhile While there are only seven matrons on the place Murdock hopes to add several more before the end of the year Dropping foals were Thrift Stamp which foaled a filly by Contraband and returned to Cannons Roar and Livia which had a filly by Contraband and visited the court of Laird A third foal by Contraband wa a colt out of Kitcat and she was served by Cannons Roar Day Dreams foaled a colt by Laird and went back to that stallion Yes Polly foaled a filly and went back to Laird Doodad had a filly by Contraband and was bred back to Cannons Roar Isheen which foaled a colt by Cannon Roar was served by Contraband ContrabandThe The farm is rich in blue grass Murdock having imported it from Lexington The soil seems to be the right kind for thorough ¬ bred raising In spots the blue grass is more than two feet high and the master of Creek Side is confident good horses can be raised on the grass grown on his place Murdock well known in this section lives on the farm where he constructed a large home homeAt At the head of the Gorbet farm main ¬ tained jointly by Sam Gorbet and his son Glenn is the young stallion Royal Leon which will have his first get in ompetition next year The Gorbet nursery is at Hudson 111 and embraces 163 acres All matrons on the farm have foaled to Royal Leon Garden Message and Blackwood Ann Grogan dropped a colt by Garden Message and re ¬ turned to him Shasta Love also dropped a colt by Royal Leon and visited the court of Garden Message The third foal to arrive was a filly by Blackwood out of Output and she was bred to Garden Message MessageTHE THE NILES FIRST PRODUCE PRODUCEAnother Another filly the first foal from The Nile was by Royal Leon and she aso was re ¬ turned to the same sire Valley the prize matron had a ooP by Royal Leon and she was bred to Blackwood Splurge and Dixie Dora which sported the silks to many vic ¬ tories under the Gorbet colors were bred this spring for the first time and they were served by Royal Leon There are four year ¬ lings roaming the farm two colts and fillies all by Royal Leon LeonNight Night Mist a daughter of Nassak now racing at Fairmount Park visited Creek Side Farm and was bred to Contraband young n of Chicle Night Mist races for Mrs E B Shipp ShippW W C Reichert who raced the famous en ¬ try of My Dandy and Brown Wisdom several years ago has dispor oi the mares he had on his farm near Belleville 111 He re ¬ tained the farm and My Dandy is living the life of Riley there The former handicap star is in excellent health Reichert states the horse will remain on the farm until death takes him He is a son of Porte Drapeau DrapeauPercy Percy C James whose farm is at Fair bury 111 is breeding in a model way His few mares are served by Rejuvenation his own stallion stallionSPARKS SPARKS HAE LARGE FARM FARMOne One of the largest bree Tng farms in the vicinity of Fairmourt Park is the 224acre pastures of C V and W F Sparks who race a stable and brc d their own horses at their farm at Cahokia 111 Standing at the head of the place is the young stallion Saracen a youn son of Sir Gallahad HI HIThe The Sparks hae a dozen mares on their farm and they are making additions each year Among the matr s are Hot Spot Sis Largo Monachia Miss Kate Peachiepie Dolly E La Sweep Long Count Chicle T Maddening Par Joyce and Concerto Most of them were bred for the first time this spring With one exception all went to Garicen Chicle T visited the court of Sun Hatter a full brothe to Sun Beau standing at E E Pershalls farm at Robertson Mo on a section of the old Barney Schreiber place where at one time 150 mares were kept by Schreiber SchreiberOf Of the six weanlings at the farm all colts five are by Saracen The other is by High Diver Foaling were Hot Spot Sis Largo Monachia Miss Kate Peachiepie and Par Joyce Peachiepie is the only mare to have a youngster by High Diver and it is her first foal
