SWEEPIDA WAS FOALED AT LITTLE BACK YARD YARDHarry Harry C Hill Has Well Appointed Stockton Farm Eight Paddocks Shelter Fine Thoroughbred Stock StockSTOCKTON STOCKTON Calif June 28 That story about Californias champion race horse Sweepida having been foated and raised in a little backyard near Stockton while in ¬ triguing to a degree and adding a touch of romance to the colts success on the turf is nevertheless a myth An itinerant iurf re ¬ porter passing through this peaceful and prosperous settlement the other day de ¬ cided to go and see for himself the dis ¬ advantages that oweepida must have en ¬ countered as a youngster What he saw was interesting interestingA A gas station attendant said Just keep on going along Wilson Way until you come to Linden road turn right and down the road about two miles or less youll come to pillars The reporter followed directions a place with a large gate with HH on the Sooner than expected he traveler came to two large pillars at the entrance of a drive ¬ way leading to a very nice little country estate On each large stone pillar was the letter H the initials of Harry Hill better known as Dutch DutchGoing Going up tn driveway that is flanked by concrete curbing and lined witli roses one is impressed with the beautiful oaks walnut trees and palms that afford both shade and a picturesque setting to the home set well back from the highway On each side of the driveway are about three or four acres of rich verdant alfalfa that adds to the charm of the Hill estate estateEIGHT EIGHT PADDOCKS PADDOCKSInthe Inthe back of the house are no less than eight paddocks well supplied with feed and water and dotted with shade tree It was a typical home of a gentleman farmer farmerOn On the farm which consists o slightly less than forty acres were six barns two of which were solely for thoroughbreds and which provided accommodation for eighteen horses horsesThree Three different corrals sheltered a prize Guernsey a Percheron sire and Hills latest addition to his thoroughbred forces the sire Gay World that he recent brought from Texas TexasIn In another paddock fetlock deep in rich green fodder were three mares two of them with filly foals both by the sire San Jose The dams were Eremite dam of Bye Sweep and La Cereza dam of Havana Lad San Jose is a son of Moonraker and Martie Bren nan by Martinet MODESTY SUSPECTED SUSPECTEDIt It was probably modesty on the part of H C Hill that prompted him to describe the small but well appointed thoroughbred nursery that he maintains in the rich and productive fields behind his home the home of Sweepida as a little backyard but there are more pretentious places throughout the state of California that do not offer such advantages or the raising of thoroughbred horses horsesBeautiful Beautiful green pastures with an abun ¬ dance of good water firm reckless soil where the yearlings can romp at will and an abundance of shade trees for their comfort with good barns to protect them from win ¬ ter rains are among the provisions Hill has made for his horses DUTCIIILL B RESTING RESTINGIncidentally Incidentally losing around in a fiveacre pasture was the campaigner Dutchill B a winner which being laid up for a rest was kicked by another horse and while making steady improvement has had the vacation extended extendedIn In charge of the Hill place while Dutch and the Missus attend th races at Holly ¬ wood is Foreman Sam Riarine who when his daily chores are completed likes to go out in the field and play with the hoises hoisesFew Few persons seem to enjoy life as much as this Sam Riarine who takes care of Dutch Hills horses in a little backyard at a place near Stockton
