PONY BALLET PROVIDES UPSET IN POLLY DRUMMOND RENEWAL RENEWALLeads Leads Summed Up and Smiles While Setting New Track Record RecordSTANTON STANTON Del June 28 Pony Ballet a homebred daughter of Theatrical Park and flaunting the silks of Mrs R H Heighe Bel Air owner was withdrawn from a claim ¬ ing race yesterday to clip onefifth of a sec ¬ ond from the fivefurlong record in winning the fifth running of the Polly Drummond Stakes this afternoon This sprightly miss who won one race was the rank outsider in the betting and when she made her own pace to run the five furlongs in 59 her backers received the handsome odds of 8240 for 2 2Gummed Gummed Up representing Mrs Ella K Bryson another Maryland patron was sec ¬ ond two and onehalf lengths in the win ¬ ners wake and half a length before Brook meade Stables Smiles who was the runner up to Flying Indian in the Astoria Stakes Flying Indian under the top burden of 122 pounds had good early speed but finished seventh seventhThere There was an award for fourthv and Hal Prince Headleys Pig Tails received it She was only a head back of Smiles and with better luck probably would have garnered a larger portion of the 5000 added purse which netted Ms Heighe 6325 6325While While Pony Ballet who had the services of Albert Schmidl leading rider of the meet ¬ ing made a runaway of the dash there was spirited competition for minor honors and the camera was called upon to separate Smiles Pig Tails and Allegheny AlleghenyFLYING FLYING INDIAN FAILS FAILSFlying Flying Indian followed the winner into the turn with Allegheny leading the others and Gummed Up in fourth position Gummed Up soon moved into second place but while Flying Indian gave up the chase Allegheny held on well and until On the Level offered her mild bid on the inside After entering the final furlong Smiles drove down on the outside with Pig Tails who after beginning slowest of all and being knocked back ap ¬ proaching the stretch making the run with her The pair came to the end in very close order with Allegheny holding on in fine style styleThere There was strong support for Equipet she being the second choice to Smiles but the daughter of Equipoise gave way after threesixteenths and was the trailer at the end Star Copy another to be favored trailed to the last stages where she passed the EquipetSirocco tiring Equipet Sirocco who fractured a canon bone while competing in the American Derby at Wash ¬ ington Park last August made a return to competition in the Greenville Handicap one of the many sparking events of the after ¬ noon and the third race but the Dixiana star dropped out of contention after the first few strides and trailed throughout Probably he was overmatched in this six furlong dash for Greentree Stables Cherry Jam who won the Brandywine Handicap and the Phoenx at Keeneland had on his running shoes ad equalled the track record of 110 for the sprint He reached the finish a halflength before Tall Trees Stables My Bill who was under colors for the first time since the Kent Handicap Hants was third and Abrasion fourth Brown Saxon gave up after attempting to match strides with My Bill but was some three lengths in the van of Sirocco who was a strong second choice to the winner winnerSAILOR SAILOR KING ON TOP TOPThe The Rehobqth Handicap which served as the sixth event and last of the best races brought Busy Morn and Fairy Chant eligi bles to the Newcastle Handicap under col ¬ ors and while Busy Morn was unable to withstand the determined challenge of the younger Sailor King from Mrs Walter M Jeffords stable she turned in a very credit ¬ able effort Fair Chant making her first start in many months finished fifth in the field of six but showed evidence of nearing her best form Sailor King who ran the mile and a sixteenth in 144 reached the finish two lengths before Busy Morn who did the pacemaking to the final stages and lasted to beat Greentree Stables Red Dock the favorite a nose for second Silent Wit ¬ ness made up enough ground in the drive to garner fourth laurels
