BELVIDERE PLANTATION HAS HISTORICAL PAST Kirks Nursery in South Carolina Dates Back to PreCivil War Days Stock Consists of Sire Banton and Three Mares Match Race Recalled RecalledCHARLESTON CHARLESTON S C June 28 Harking back to the days vhrn racing devotees rode to their favorite courses in tallyhos and re ¬ splendent hacks to wager on the side 10000 and more on match races is Belvidere Plantation PlantationThat That rambling estate of several thousand acres with a halfmile course and in the deep South a few miles out of the pictures ¬ que city of Charleston is now the breeding establishment of Richard Kirk There stands the stallion Banton A foal of 1923 and a fairly good performer during his rac ¬ ing days the big bay is a son of Cudgel tittle Rock by Trap Rock At present Bantons court consists of but three thor ¬ oughbred mares but Kirk plans increase gradually the breeding activities at his nursery nurseryBelvidere Belvidere Plantatio is closely connected with the history and fame of its locale In the immediate vicinity was foaled the cham ¬ pion mare Albine Foaled in 1856 and a daughter of Jeff Davis Breeze by imported Monarch the marc defeated Planet in a noted match race at the Washington Course al Charleston in 1862 Washington Course was one of the first tracks to stage n meet ¬ ing in America AmericaThe The match race between Albine and Planet was an occasion of the era A large crowd witnessed the contest and because of Planets renown huge sums were won and lost in the betting Planet a champion racer of his age was a foal of 1855 at Major Thomas W Doswells Virginia plantation plantationVICTOR VICTOR AND VANQUISHED MATCHED MATCHEDIn In recognition of his prowess Planet was put in oil colors The painting was cut from its frame on Major Doswells estate during the Civil War It was later found in a knap ¬ sack and now hangs in the study of the well known breeder Arthur B Hancock at Paris Ky KyPlanet Planet was a son of Revenue and out of the producing mare Nina which was by Boston Frolicsome Fanny Nina begot ex ¬ ceptional racers One of these was Orion j a full brother to Planet PlanetThere There is tragedy in the story of Albine After her defeat of Planet the mare was mated with the latter and produced Gen ¬ eral York in 1864 Subsequent events dur ¬ ing those wartorn days brought Shermans troops through the countryside in their march to the sea Captured Albine was lost to the stud The mare was later traced to the vicinity of St Louis but no further in ¬ formation about her or her produce was found Albine was foaled bred and owned by Jasper DuGue Ferguson noted South Carolinian CarolinianBecause Because of its connection with history thoroughbred lore and located in a country imbued with deep affection for the horse it is fitting that Kirk should continue breeding operations at Belvidere Plantation For a start two foals and a yearling roam the pastures The foals are a bay filly by Ban ton Heart o Gold by Sir Barton and a filly by Banton Memorina by Bright Knight The yearling also by Banton is out of Rose wing by Nasturtium
