Alger Leaves Non-Winner Ranks at Fairmount Park Comes From Off Pace to Earn Length Decision Over Dont COLLINSVILLE, 111., June 22.— Alger, a strapping two-year-old son of Tintagel and Petaline, racing in the silks of Earl B. Smith, backed into an even money favorite, left the ranks of non -winners at Fair-mount Park this afternoon when he came from behind the pace to win a length decision in the fourth race. He defeated the locally-owned Dont for the stable of W. F. and C. V. Sparks; Never Alone, representative of Miss Bobbie DeWitt and nine other maidens over the five furlongs distance. Ably handled by G. McLeod, the favorite outbroke his field and when Dont elected to go to front, McLeod dropped back into third position, racing behind Never Alone who forced the pace to the last furlong. However, the favorite might have scored a lucky victory, as Dont was bearing out badly in the stretch and Never Alone and Linda Sands followed her. McLeod managed to keep the Smith representative straight in the stretch and responding gamely when roused in the last furlong drew away from his opponents. In spite of her running out, Dont came again near the end and was holding her own with the victor in the late stages. Droop and apprentice W. Bailey proved the winning combination in the five and one-half furlongs first race. Dusky Duke finished second and Paducah, coupled In the mutuel field, garnered the show. Cahokian, representing the local owners, W. F. and C. V. Sparks, took down the second race at six furlongs in easy fashion, coming from behind to get a two lengths decision over Big Bozo. Myrna was third, apprentice R. Phelps was astride the winner. Joe Burman, owned by E. B. McAtee scored his first victory of the meeting in the six furlongs third race. Snow Flower was the runner-up and Carotaur was third.
