L. I.. April 11.— The veteran trainer. George Odom, is starting the long New York racing season with 24 thoroughbreds for seven different owners, including himself. Odom has 13 for Louis B. Mayer, nine of them two-year-olds, three for William LaBoyteaux, two for Marshall Field, two for Mrs. W. Plunket Stewart, a pair for Colin McLeod, Jr., and one each for Mrs. R. L. Gerry and his own account. The older horses in the Mayr division which Odom recently took over are the three-year-old colts, Free France and For Valour; the crack three-year-old filly, Whirlabout, and Iron Maiden, also a three-year-old filly. Neither of the colts has yet started. Free France is a son of Man o War — LaFrance. thus a half-brother to Johnstown and Jacola. While he is a handsome individual, he is unfortunately troubled with a throat ailment, and Odom says it is a question how far he will be able to run without running out of puff. For Valour is a sizeable and racy-looking chestnut son of Blenheim II. — Girl in Armor. Both of these colts are heavily staked. High on Whirlabout Whirlabout was one of the best of her sex last season, winning four stakes, but she has not grown over the winter. However, she is not a remarkably small filly and Odom expects her to give a good account of herself. Iron Maiden is a bay daughter of War Admiral — Betty Derr with somewhat more modest pretensions, though she was a winner in 1943. All but one of the nine Mayer juveniles, only a few of whom have been named, is not coughing at the present time. The one juvenile in the Mayer band who is now training is a big chestnut colt by Annapolis Blue, who is still anonymous. Names have been received for a colt and filly by Beau Pere, the stallion the movie producer imported from Australia a few years back. The colt is from Dark Channelle and is a brown named Old Dad, while the filly from French Vamp has the same color and will race as Mother Tongue. Another Beau Pere offspring in the Odom division of the divided Mayer eastern stable Carleton Roles has the others is a brown colt out of Leaf. There are also a colt and two fillies by Ajax, another Australian stallion. The colt is a bay from Eastward II., while the fillies are from Wild Law and Wishie and are also bays. All three were imported in utero when Mayer brought their dams to his Perris. Calif., farm. Timeless Stake Winner The one pensioner Odom has at Belmont for Mrs. Gerry is an attractive bay colt by Pharamond II. — Mary Jane, and his trainer thinks this youngster may prove to be a runner. One juvenile Odom has who has already demonstrated a high turn of speed is Colin McLeod. Jr.s Timeless, who won all three of his starts at Hialeah, capping his cam- paign with a clever victory in the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes. The son of Grand Time shipped well and is being prepped for a stake at Pimlico. Odom is not sure how well hell do when the distances are stretched out later in the year, but right now Timeless has displayed as much speed as any of the juveniles who raced this winter. One of the LaBoyteaux trio who has shown promise is Directory, a three-year- old daughter of Challenger II. — Join Us, who ran second in her last two starts in Florida. Of the Mrs. Stewart duo, Dairy Lady, who ran creditably in stakes last year, has evinced the best form. The Marshall Field pair are Brenner Pass and Scenic. The latter unloaded with a fever and is still on the sick list. Odoms own horse is the three-year-old filly Creamy, whom he describes as "cheap."
