Christophers sterling stayer, Grey Wing, made a successful return to competition in the feature event at Jamaica today. Second j choice in the wagering to Mrs. Ethel D. , Jacobs Stymie, he beat that three-year-old j five lengths in the featured Roamer Hand- . icap, ,000 event, at a mile and one-six- . teenth. Dock Stables Sugar Ration fin- . ished another length and a quarter farther r back in third place, while Belair Studs I moody gray, Trierarch, was last in the small field, another six lengths away. The afternoon, which started out sunny y but chilly, soon became overcast and a i light sprinkle dampened the large crowd of f 25,335 shortly before the running of the e feature. The days sport was run without untoward incident and early arrivals were p greeted by the pleasant news that the grooms strike, which had marred the first two days of the season, had been settled. Favorites won the first two races, and Grey Wing* was a well supported second choice. Wagering was again very brisk with ,723,232 passing through the machines. While Grey Wing made every pole a win- ning one in the Roamer, the race was not quite as facile as that suggests. The son of Halcyon opened up a four-length lead going to the first turn, with Sugar Ration second and Trierarch and Stymie trailing. Going down the backstretch the Christo- Continued on Page Sixteen | | | Grey Wing Annexes Roomer Handicap By Five-Length Margin at Jamaica Oval : • 1 1 1 • 1 ; - 7 ; " ■» Christopher Racer Draws * Away From Favored Stymie After Duel on Stretch Turn Continued from Page One pher colorbearer shortened stride abruptly as if short, as trainer Harris Brown had said he feared his charge was before the race, and the three others closed on him in a group. At the far turn Stymie moved into second place, only a neck behind Grey Wing, and they rounded the bend into the stretch as a trio, with Sugar Ration only a half length farther back. Trierarch had dropped out of it. Charlie Wahler roused Grey Wing as they straightened for home and he responded by drawing away with authority, steadily widening his margin in the run to the wire, while Stymie was struggling futilely behind him under Johnny Long-dens urging. J Grey Wing earned ,275 for his Florida owner as his portion of the ,000 purse and stepped the distance in 1:46. He paid .40. Dodson Astride Double Jockey Doug Dodson made it a double M he hustled The Sultan, a gray son of : Mahmoud, to the wire a half length before the favored Smiles in the first division of j I the Woodside Purse, a six-furlong dash for i j older horses. Sissie Smith closed with a tremendous rush to take third money as the winner ticked off the route in l:132/5. The Sultan, who flaunts the silks of the I Cain Hoy Stable, broke closely behind The I Killer and moved into the lead just out- side the quarter pole. He stuck it out with I courage to hold off Smiles, who was run-; ning swiftly at the finish. The winner returned 4.90. Star of Padula, who walked over in yes-! terdays first race, proved a surprise win- • ■ ner in the nightcap today. Yesterday he was approximately 16 to 1 when the wager- I j ing was stopped. Today C. F. Kohlers horse met the rivals who declined the issue [ yesterday, led from wire to wire and paid, his rare backers 9.70. 1.00 and .90. The favored Marogay was in close pursuit of the winner most of the way, but] | there was no catching the erratic son of Brandon Mint today and the final margin was three-quarters of a length. Family Doc finished third, another two lengths farther back. Miss Puritan, a well-backed second choice, unseated jockey Bobby Permane in the gate before the start and finished a distant last. | Star of Padula stepped the distance in 1:14, a considerable improvement over the 3:45% he required for his solitary jaunt yesterday. Jimmy Stout rode him on both occasions. The sport opened on an auspicious note when Mrs. J. A. Coburns Rosa Bonheur scored a front-running victory in the first event, a six-furlong dash for modest platers. The public guessed right in the second, : j I i j I making it two winning choices in a row as Grant Thorns He Got There broke on top and stuck it out gamely under the busy whip of Teddy Atkinson to report in front a length to the good of the fast-closing Helvetian, who races for the Wheatley Stable. The winner was credited with the brisk timing of :583/5 for five furlongs, only three-fifths of a second over Red Sonnets track mark, but a private clocking caught him in 1:0035, which seemed more reasonable in view of the slow first race.
