Maryland Maryland Spring Spring Season Season Opens Opens Today; Today; Pukka Pukka Gin Gin in in Division Division of of Experimental Experimental Pimlico Is Scene Of Joint Meeting Field of Eleven to Contest Rowe Memorial, First Stake Of Twenty-Eight Day Session BALTIMORE, Md., April 1 1 .—Beginning tomorrow at old Pimlico prospects are entertained for 28 days of "glorious racing." The impending spring season, fostered by all four major Maryland tracks in a joint undertaking, bids fair to go down in the turf history of this state as an illustrious contribution to contemporary American racing. During the period of sport a daily minimum purse distribution of 0,000 will prevail and this has attracted the majority of the best horses campaigning today: in fact, stabling applications were received for so many equine performers that it was necessary, to an extent, to invoke the cancelling prerogative as well as enlist facilities offered at Laurel Park, where a substantial overflow has been quartered. Wartime conditions, specifically, travel restrictions, were responsible for the decision to hold another "four-in-one" meeting at Pimlico. Other state tracks being more or less isolated, prohibiting access by usual traveling measures, the Maryland Jockey Club graciously consented to usage of its plant for a combined enterprise between itself and the Southern Maryland Agricultural Association Bowie •. the Maryland State Fair, Inc. Laurel ►, and the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association Havre de Grace". Under the arrangement each association in reality enjoys a seven-day meeting. In this way each of the four tracks have left 18 more days of racing, since 25 days annually are allowed. And should conditions permit in the fall it is hoped a season of 72 days will result, with racing divided between here and possibly Bowie and Laurel. Either one of the two latter tracks can, under the new racing law. operate for 50 days during the year. Sun Again Carries 122 Pounds Although a joint undertaking, this meet-| ing is under management of the Maryland Jockey Club. Largely through the persistence of its president, Henry A. Parr IH.. to establish racing in this state on a plane second to none, a program of 20 heavily endowed stakes is scheduled for decision. The first of these is the ,500 added Rowe Memorial Handicap, fashioned for three-[ year-olds and older at six furlongs and which features the opening day program. For tomorrows Rowe Memorial. 11 of the original 26 nominees accepted and. although bereft of highweights, Devil Diver and Shut Out, the event, listed sixth, has drawrt Calumet Farms Sun Again, asked to carry top impost of 122 pounds, as well as that establishments Pensive and Miss Keene-e land. The latter two have been weighted at 106 and 108, respectively. This trio naturally overshadow the field, for here is a proficient triumvirate indeed. Sengers Burgaway, 106 pounds, and Vincent Ciceros Royal Flush, 106 pounds. As will be remembered, Sun Again captured the McLennan Memorial this past winter as Hialeah Park, administering a drubbing to Green tree Stables Four Freedoms in so doing, and then, in turn, was given a startling but close setback by the Greentree representative in the Widener. However, in tomorrows stake he will have no Four Freedoms to contend with. Incidentally, he is in fine fettle. Of course, this is no more than natural, in as much as he has been in competition over the winter. As a final tuneup for the Rowe he worked six furlongs yesterday in 1:18 over a fast course, covering the first half mile in :512£. Although Sun Again appears the nominal favorite anything can happen in a horse race. Such as Cape Cod, dangerous when at his best; Sollure, who also turned in a very good morning trial yesterday, and Porters Cap, fresh after a rest at Aiken, S. C, are apt to give the Calumet representative a tough time and make of the race an interesting affair throughout. The program of eight races filled very well. In pursuit of a policy meant to provide "racing events of an allowance nature are noticeable in three of the numbers, with four other races being fashioned for platers. In passing it may be permissible to touch on the fact that a ,000 plater ironically enough has the opportunity to earn more than his valuation here since the winners share in the ,500 minimum purse is ,100. As prevailed at last falls combined meeting here, post time during the week will be 12 noon, while on Saturdays find holidays it will be 1:00 p. m.
