Y., April 17.— Mrs. Louis Lazares Smart Sheila made every post a winning one in the featured Coquette Handicap at Jamaica today. The outsider of the field of six who contested this six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares scored cleverly under a hustling ride by Nick Jemas, leading Cain Hoy Stables Best Risk two and one-half lengths at the wire, while C. T. Chenerys Anthemion was only a head farther back in third place, a half length before J. Smallwoods What Not. The three-year-old daughter of Jamestown — Ship Ablaze, by Man o War, stepped the three-quarters in 1:13 5, acceptable time for the muddy strip, and paid 9.20. A muggy, overcast afternoon and moderate program failed to deter 25,233 avid turf fans from journeying out to the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs cozy track today. They were rewarded by seeing the first four favorites make good. Charles McNultys Wise Step and J. J. Murphys Copaca Bana coupled for a Daily Double of 2.90, resuming the trend which had prevailed since the opening day. with the exception of Friday and Saturday. Copaca Bana and Longchamps Farms Leslie-Grey, who won the two races for two-year-olds, appear better than average youngsters, stepping down in identical time of 1:0123 and winning with daylight to spare. The latter filly was odds-on and fully justified that confidence as she trounced Wheatley Stables Mountaineer by three widening lengths. Opens Up Long Early Lead Smart Sheila, who was saddled by W. O. Hicks, eastern representative of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association, had displayed early speed in a number of her Hialeah races as well as in her race here opening day, when she ran fifth behind Fox Brownie but she had stopped almost as rapidly as she started. Today the Jamestown miss made no mistakes. Leaving the gate as though shot from a crossbow, she quickly opened up three lengths on Best Risk with Anthemion lapped on that Blenheim II. filly as Briarhone.
