* Twenty -Three Nominations Received For ,000 Roger Williams Handicap Reaping Glory, Loveday and Argone Woods Are Among Those in Pawtucket Stake PAWTUCKET. R. I.. April 17— The 1944 renewal ol the ,000.added Roger Williams Handicap, which will serve as the headline attraction at Narragansett Park next Saturday afternoon, should prove one of the more interesting events of the current New England season. Racing secretary anil handicapper Mathias "Ty" Shea of the Rhode Island track, announced this morning no less than 23 top-flight performers have been made eligible for the week-end feature, which is the second of the five stake offerings listed for decision at Narragansett this spring. The Roger Wililams was inaugurated at Narragansett in 1934 when Roustabout was returned the winner over Grey Glade, Black Buddy and a better than average field. Subsequent renewals of the stake fell to such performers as Advising Anna. Appealing, Fair Knightess, Sun Egret, Devalue and the French-bred star. Grasshopper U., who attained major honors in the test during his 1942 campaign. The 1944 running of the Roger Williams should be one of the best in the stakes history inasmuch as a clever band is named for the attraction. Prominent in the list of probable starters are Mrs. H. P. Bonners fleet Reaping Glory, Christopher Ranchs Argonne Woods, Mrs. W. R. Flemmings speedy Loveday, who won the Inaugural Purse last week; H. H. Haags Ball Player, and A. J. Vilones Victory Drive. Lunt Names Three Dr. W. I. Lunt, local patron, will have a strong hand for the Roger Williams in his three nominees. Boot and Spur, Merry Sunshine and Total Eclipse. Boot and Spur won his only start at the local oval while Merry Sunshine showed her heels 10 a good field of three -year -olds in the Dumas Purse, which was decided at the recent Oaklawn Park meeting. Included in the group following Merry Sunshine to the wire in the Dumas was the Arkansas Derby victor and Kentucky Derby eligible, Challenge Me. Others named for the Roger Williams are Jacob Freedmans Resolute II., J. H. Carrs Kantar Run, Samuel Garfields Mark, Walter Gullatts First Draft, Adelard Lamoureux Momo Flag and Dr. Johnson. Miss Margaret McCallums Rez-tips, Merry-Ho Stables Scotch Abbot, R. Metcalfs Goober Lad, Hessey H. Millers Incoming. Mrs. F. D. Rices good three-year-old Green Bush, L. E.
