Ky.. April 17.— Parasang, a stakes winner in the mid-west last season, carried the red, white and green ban- , ner of Denvers C. U. Yaeger to a popular J and consummate victory in the mile of the . William H. Shelley Purse, feature presenta- 1 tion on a cloudy Mondays program at Churchill Downs. Burdened with top 1 weight of 120 pounds and sharing the bulk of support with The Finest, the seven-year- old Halcyon stallion went to the front when I j ; jockey W. Morrisey was ready on the turn 1 I 1 and breezed to the stand four and one-half I j lengths in advance of C. N. Finchs Brown . Mate, the runner-up in a field of five. 1 1 Camps First, representing F. The Finest, brought up the rear. j This Keeneland-at-Churchill feature was named, obviously, for the veteran Kentucky 1 racing official. Shelley serves as one of 1 the stewards at this meeting and following 1 the decision of the race presented a trophy to owner Yaeger. The track was fast for 1 the Shelley and the successful son of Hal- 1 cyon traversed the distance in 1:395, time that was more adequate than sensational. The many in a fair-sized Monday attendance who fancied his chances collected at the rate of .40 for in the old fashioned "iron men." Virtually No Contest This was Parasangs second victory of the new racing season, incidentally, and it was virtually "no contest" once he moved to Brown Mate and Camps First midway the turn. Brown Mate and Camps First had engaged one another in what is technically known as a "suicidal" pace duel to that point with Parasang bowling along leisurely several lengths back of them. He shot through between Brown Mate and The Finest curving into the stretch and piled up a commanding lead with no visible effort in the quarter mile run by the stands. Brown Mate and Camps First injected whatever element of the competitive there 1 was in the proceedings, continuing their • duel right down to the wire, with Brown 1 Mate prevailing for second money. Another public choice graced the winners . enclosure when G. W. Jones Valdina I Date, ridden by apprentice W. Bailey, annexed . the six-furlong Forest Retreat Purse. ! Forcing the pace of the "fielder," Jo Agnes, I j into the stretch, he finally disposed of that j rival, then squeezed home in a photo finish. They were almost equal favorites in that dash, a last-minute flood of money appearing for the Simmons color bearer. Stymie was a distant second behind the veteran Grey Wing in a middle distance race here and had stretch-running ability in Florida. Ariel Flight was a surprise winner of the Bahamas Handicap at Hialeah, but has displayed little since. All of the eight named overnight for the second division of the St. James will carry 113 pounds. They are Mrs. Donald H. Peters Bull Dandy, a double winner at this meeting; Mrs. T. Christophers Bel Reigh and Mill River Stables Pyracanth, who will perform as an entry; Crispin Oglebay s Boy Knight, Joe W. Browns Fox Brownie, Brookmeade Stables Ariel Game, W. S. Homes Tex Martin and Dock Stables War Dressing. Tex Martin was a winner of his lone start this season, when he headed Swimmin Hole in a six-furlong class "C" handicap, after standing a long drive, under Bobby Permane. Sterling Young is slated to ride him tomorrow. Bel Reigh, a good stakes winner last year, was scratched from the second division of the Experimental last Wednesday, in which Tit Tat Toe was a distant third behind Stir Up and Autocrat. Fox Brownie Goes Postward Fox Brownie was a somewhat closer third in the first half of the Experimental, won by Stronghold, with Pukka Gin second. Sweeping Time was fourth in that race, five lengths farther back, after forcing the pace, and Boy Knight and Ariel Game trailed. The former had some early speed and probably needed the race. Trainer Hugh Dufford remarked that he might be considered greedy for sending Bull Dandy back after this race, after winning two here and having the Wood in view. But he explained that the colt is such a good "doer" that he would have tc work him as hard as if he had actually been in the race and might as well run him. While expressing some doubt about the son of Bull Leas ability to go on, Dufford pointed out that the colt has done everything asked of him this year.
