R. I., April 17.— Finding the soft track which prevailed at Narragansett Park today very much to his liking. Aboyne carried Miss Jean Beatties silks to an impressive triumph in the featured New London Purse. J. C. Bentleys Bring Me Home, who was installed the choice for the six-furlong headliner, finished second, two lengths behind the winner and a head before Mrs. H. P. Bonners Reaping Glory, who was third in the field of eight sprinters which met. Aboyne. a seven-year-old gelded son of Mirafel and Farceuse, was claimed by Miss Beattie at the local oval on inaugural day and proved a good investment. Shouldering 118 pounds, which was top weight under the allowance conditions of the New London, the victor sped the distance over the muddy strip in 1:13*5. commendable time, indeed. Lightly regarded in the speculation, the Beattie gelding was good for 5.60 in the "tote." Saves Ground on Turn Jockey Milton Briggs, who was astride Aboyne, sent his charge up fast after the good start and had his mount a half length before Jopier at the initial quarter mile pole. Reaping Glory, who was off rather slowly, was hustled to reach serious contention and occupied third position at this stage, while Bring Me Home was a determined and well placed fourth. Aboyne saved ground around the upper turn and came into the stretch with an advantage of a length and one -half over Bring Me Home, who drifted out slightly . before being settled for the closing drive. Son of War, on the extreme outside, raced j third, while Reaping Glory was fourth. 1 Aboyne continued gamely at his task and had no serious difficulty in holding Bring I Me Home safe, although the latter was : hard pressed to withstand the belated chal- i length of Reaping Glory for the place award. Son of War faltered nearing the finish to run fourth, while Jopier dropped back to last. A crowd of 10,000 turned out at the Rhode Island course for the first full week of the 1944 spring meeting. Excellent sport i was in order and several stoutly supported . APPRENTICE K. SCAWTHORN— Was astride the two Mrs. W. Renard winners, Bus Girl and Reyes, at Narragansett Park yesterday. j 1 I : i i thoroughbreds were successful in reaching the winners circle. Mrs. Wallace Renards stable sent out two winners. Reyes accounted for the siXj furlongs fourth and Bus Girl earned an easy victory in the fifth at a similar distance. Trainer S. W. Shapoff and apprentice Kenneth Scawthorn shared in the Renard double. Reyes defeated Fresh as Paint, James Acre and five other sprinters. while Bus Girl attained her victory over Sir Talbot, Rough Command and four] other platers. Reyes was favorite at 4 to 5 and Bus Girl returned supporters 17 to 5. |
