I., April 18.— In a spir- j ited finish, Goober Lad, representative of ; Metcalf and Carr, earned a driving triumph in the Bridgeport Purse, feature attraction at Narragansett Park today before an enthusiastic crowd of 10,000. Hard ridden through the stretch by Hubert Trent, Goober Lad downed Mrs. R. M. Buccolas Billy O. at the end of the one mile and seventy yards by a head margin. J. H. Carrs Kan-tar Run, who raced coupled with Goober Lad, finished third, a neck farther back, while Red Vulcan, the favorite Ball Player, White Hope and High Name completed the journey behind the placed horses in the order named. Goober Lad was off third and was permitted to race under light restraint while Ball Player and Red Vulcan engaged each other for the early lead. Nearing the upper turn Trent sent Goober Lad up on the inside and the eventual victor forged to the front, opening up a length advantage over Red Vulcan, who was a half length before the faltering Ball Player. Once settled for the run home, Goober Lad increased his advantage to two lengths while Red Vulcan and Ball Player dropped out of serious contention at the eighth pole. Billy O., who had been well back to the last three furlongs, then began a stout challenge on the extreme outside and his bid carried him within a head of the winner and a neck before Kantar Run, who closed determinedly between horses to earn the minor portion of the purse. Running time for the race was 1:44. Apprentice Harry Pratt handled the victors in the third, fourth and fifth races. Pratt rade M. M. Schwebels Reformatory to a popular triumph over Friars Scout, Hy-Cop and five other ordinary platers in the six furlongs third, then came back to score astride G. S. Gladneys Black Africa in the fourth at a similar distance. The latter defeated Night Bomber by a neck margin and Riskton was third. Pratt gave a steady performance to win the fifth event with J. H. Labine s Paul A. At the end of the three-quarter mile dash, his mount held a three-quarters length advantage over Aldridge, who was a head before Bright Arc. Pratt completed his days successes *ith a victory on the outsider, Brooklandville, in the seventh race.
