Ky., April 18.— The pro- posed seasonal debut of Hyman Friedbergs Harriet j Sue in Wednesdays Ashland Stakes on the Keeneland-at-Churchill card: the arrival of B. R. Eatons Valley Flares from Bay Meadows, and a clever mile and furlong trial by Alfred Parkers By Jimminy highlighted Derby activities today at the Downs. Trainer Jack Hanover, the former rider, has confidently selected a stakes event for the first 1944 appearance of the Friedberg filly. Only four are named to oppose Harriet Sue in the Ashland, which is restricted to three-year-olds of her sex at six furlongs and has ,000 added. Two of these, Letmenow and Paddle, represent Hal Price Headley, guiding spirit in the visiting Keeneland organization. The others are Darby Dan Farms Darby Delilah and G. R. Schneiders Gallahue. So superior does Harriet Sue loom in the Ashland that the Louisville-owned filly is expected to parade postward the shortest-priced choice thus far in the meeting. Valley Flares, the invader from the West Coast, comes recommended by winning form at the Meadows. He is, incidentally, a son of Omahas Ascot Cup-winning brother, Flares, the sire also of Skytracer, and is an own brother of Chop Chop, victor in last years Empire City Handicap. Owner Parker was on hand to see his By Jimminy drill a mile on the fast footing in :50, 1:1535, 1:41%, and gallop out a mile and an eighth in 1:56 with impressive dis- patch. Trainer Jimmy Smith had returned from Keeneland to supervise the move. By Jimminy may appear in the mile Stony Point, a three-year-old condition affair on Thursday, or in Saturdays ,000 Ben Ali Handicap of a mile and a sixteenth. M. B. Goff s Skytracer, who performed so creditably in finishing second to Stir Up for the Flamingo, after being blocked by both that horse and Director J, E. in the final quarter mile, was on the track for a handy six furlongs in :50 and 1:1535. He is expected to make his local debut in Thurs- | days Stony Point. Alorter, another prob- able for that Blue Grass Trial, moved thiough a handy five furlongs in :48 and 1:01. Challenge Me. recovering from a siege of coughing, breezed six furlongs in 1 : 26. Zaca-pet, a Derby eligible of negligible promise, opened up three furlongs in :3535. in anticipation of his performance in Wednesdays six-furlong Castleton Purse.
